Austin Abrams (Euphoria) is said to be the top choice to star in Zach Cregger’s upcoming live-action reboot of the Resident Evil franchise, per The Hollywood Reporter. Abrams is already part of the cast of Cregger’s next upcoming feature, the ensemble horror feature, Weapons.

It’s unknown what role or character Cregger has in mind for Abrams for the upcoming production, other than that the actor is being looked at to star in the feature based on the iconic survival horror video game franchise from Capcom. Sony is reportedly moving fast on gearing up production for the reboot, planning for a summer shoot in Europe, where Cregger is already said to be scouting locations.

Cregger broke out as a hot new filmmaker thanks to the success of 2022’s Barbarian. His next film, Weapons, is due out early next year and also stars Josh Brolin and Julia Garner.

Constantin Film is producing and co-financing Resident Evil. It’s being produced by Constantin’s Robert Kulzer, Vertigo Entertainment’s Roy Lee and Miri Yoon, and also PlayStation Productions. THR notes that the new reboot is on “the horror track,” along with having elements of a “wilderness survival thriller.”

Cregger is co-writing the script with Shay Hatten (John Wick: Chapter 4, Army of the Dead). The reboot is currently slated for a Fall 2026 release.
