Birds of Prey Casts Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Huntress and Black Canary

The DC film universe has its Huntress and Black Canary. Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Jurnee Smollett-Bell will play the roles in Birds of Prey, according to Deadline. The two actresses were on the shortlist for the roles, as reported last week.

Winstead will play Helena Bertinelli, a former mafia princess whose family was murdered in a mob hit and becomes the vigilante Huntress. Winstead is best known for her work in films like Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, 10 Cloverfield Lane and the third season of FX’s Fargo series.

Meanwhile, Smollett-Bell (Underground, Eve’s Bayou) will take on the role of Black Canary, aka Dinah Lance. The two join Margot Robbie, who will reprise her role of Harley Quinn, in the film. The three will team up along with the as-yet-uncast Renee Montoya to take on the mob boss Black Mask with the help of Cassandra Cain in a Gotham that isn’t currently being protected by Batman.

Justina Machado (One Day at a Time) and Roberta Colindrez (Vida) are still under consideration to play Montoya in the film, which Cathy Yan will direct from a script by Christina Hodson. The film is set to release on February 7th, 2020.
