One of the big questions fans may have had at the end of Avengers: Infinity War is: “Why didn’t Thanos just kill them?” The Mad Titan beats down the heroes and gets everything he wants, but never thinks to slaughter them even though he has the power. Marvel actually has a reason for that, as revealed in the book Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War — The Art of the Movie.

In the book (via CBR), Ryan Meinerding, Marvel Studios head of visual development, said: “The plan of getting all the Infinity Stones is putting him in a position of being so powerful that he is sort of calmer, more single-minded, and more reasonable. He is not necessarily worried about killing the heroes. As long as he ends up with the stones, he can accomplish what he wants. That was sort of the place where we were starting. We were trying to find looks that were more casual, because he wouldn’t really need his armor after he had gathered more than one Infinity Stone.

Of course, Thanos did kill Loki and eventually wiped out half of the team (and the universe’s population) once he got the stones. It’s believed that the next film, Avengers 4, will bring some (if not all) of these characters back.
