Fighting With My Family Has Disappointing Opening Weekend At Box Office
How To Train Your Dragon: Hidden World opened #1 at the box office this weekend, earning $55.5 million. The opening ranks as the second biggest February opening ever for an animated movie (The LEGO Movie remains #1 with $69 million). Interestingly enough, Hidden World is the best first weekend for the How To Train Your Dragon trilogy, topping the $43.7 million opening of the first film and the $49.4 million of the second. The film also had a big opening overseas last weekend with $185 million, so it is well on its way to being profitable after you account for the film’s $125 million budget.
Alita: Battle Angel fell to #2 in its second weekend, earning just $12 million (a 58% drop from its opening weekend). The film has now earned $60 million domestically, which is a bit disappointing, but is doing well overseas with $103 million.
The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part fell to #3 with $9.6 million, bringing its domestic total to $83.2 million and its overseas total to $52 million, well behind the $257 million the original grossed.
Fighting With My Family, the new film based on the life of WWE star Paige and produced by and starring the Rock, had a disappointing opening at #4 with $8 million despite positive reviews. That being said, the film had a low budget of $11 million so is likely to still make a profit.
Isn’t It Romantic rounded out the top five with $7.4 million, bringing its total gross to $33 million, already above its $31 million budget.
The only other debut of the weekend was Run the Race which opened at #10 with $2.23 million.
