During a press presentation earlier today in New York City, HBO and HBO Max Content Chairman and CEO Casey Bloys announced the renewal of two Game of Thrones prequel spin-off shows, House of the Dragon, and the yet-to-be-released A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. This will extend each of the shows’ runs through 2028.
Both series will air on HBO and also be available to stream on HBO Max. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms earning a second season renewal comes ahead of the first season’s debut, scheduled for Sunday, January 18. Per HBO and Warner Bros. Discovery, the show’s second season will debut later in 2027.
House of the Dragon is currently awaiting its third season, which is slated for a Summer 2026 debut. The renewal brings the show’s run to four seasons, which is slated to debut on HBO later in 2028. HBO previously renewed the smash-hit series for a third season last year ahead of the second season’s debut.
Speaking on the announcement via a press release, HBO Programming EVP and Head of HBO Drama Series and Films Francesca Orsi stated, “We are thrilled to be able to deliver new seasons of these two series for the next three years, for the legion of fans of the Game of Thrones universe. Together, House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms reveal just how expansive and richly imagined George R. R. Martin’s universe continues to be.”
Orsi continued, “In January, I think audiences will be delighted by the inspiring underdog tale of Dunk and Egg that George and Ira Parker have so beautifully captured. And this Summer, House of the Dragon is set to ignite once again with some of its most epic battles yet.”
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms takes place in Westeros, centering on the adventures of the unexpected duo of Dunk and Egg. Dunk refers to Ser Duncan the Tall, and Egg is his young squire, the boy destined to become King Aegon Targaryen.
