HBO Max is taking a walk down some spurious magical roads from the DC Universe, with a Constantine series in reportedly the works. Deadline reports that the streaming platform has a series based on the DC character in early development, with Guy Bolton set to write. The site reports that Bolton has written the pilot script and will open up a writer’s room next month.
JJ Abrams’ Bad Robot will produce the series, which will lean into the darker elements of Constantine’s source material. It will follow a younger John Constantine in London and, per Variety will tie into the streamer’s planned Justice League Dark series. The search is on for an actor to play the titular role.
This would be the latest version of the character to see life, following Keanu Reeves’ portrayal in the 2005 film and Matt Ryan’s portrayal that has spanned NBC’s 2014 series and now the Arrowverse, where he is a main cast member of Legends of Tomorrow. HBO Max is investing big in DC projects including John Cena’s Peacemaker spinoff from The Suicide Squad, the aforemention Justice League Dark, and a Gotham PD series tying into Matt Reeves’ The Batman set to join DC Universe converts Titans, Doom Patrol, Harley Quinn, and more.
