HBO Max Renews Peacemaker For Season Two, James Gunn Back to Write & Direct
Peacemaker will get plenty more chances to screw things up, as HBO Max has renewed the show ahead of its season one finale. WarnerMedia announced on Wednesday that the hit show, which stars John Cena as the titular character, will return for a second season.
The series, a spinoff of James Gunn’s DCEU fulm The Suicide Squad, has been a success for the streaming platform as the platform’s top show across multiple social media platforms (as usual, HBO Max has not revealed viewing numbers). It’s also been a critical success for its offbeat humor and action sequences. The season finale premieres Thursday.
James Gunn will be back to write and direct all episodes for season two, which does not yet have an announced episode. Gunn said of the renewal:
“Creating Peacemaker has been one of the true highlights of my life, both professionally and otherwise, with John Cena and the incredible creative team around me, as well as our partners at HBO Max. To have something we all love so much be loved by the audience in turn has been a wonderful experience. I can’t wait for folks to see where Team Peacemaker goes in Season Two!”
Cena added, “I am incredibly honored and humbled by the response to Peacemaker and the experience of playing this character. Thank you to James Gunn, Peter Safran, HBO Max, the crew, and my castmates who worked tirelessly to make this unforgettable series.”
The series stars Cena, Danielle Brooks, Freddie Stroma, Jennifer Holland, Chukwudi Iwuji, Steve Agee, and Robert Patrick. It’s described as follows:
Peacemaker follows the explosive escapades of the character that John Cena reprises in the aftermath of James Gunn’s 2021 film The Suicide Squad – a compellingly vainglorious man who believes in peace at any cost, no matter how many people he has to kill to get it.
