It looks like it will be another big opening weekend for The Rock. His new film, Hobbs & Shaw, is currently on track to finish No. 1 at the box office this weekend for an estimated $60 million+. The film had an estimated $23.8 million opening day (via Deadline).

While this would normally be a strong opening, Hobbs & Shaw still faces a bit of an uphill battle due to its reported $200 million production budget. The film will need some juice and box office legs, including in the foreign markets, to get into the breakeven territory.

Per Deadline, the film’s total cost is $360 million including prints and advertising. That means even if the film makes in the range of $600 million worldwide, it might not break even until it hits home video. Not to mention, $60-$65 million would still be among one of the smaller opening weekends for the Fast and Furious film franchise. 2 Fast 2 Furious opened with about $50 million in 2003. 2006’s Tokyo Drift had a $23 million opening weekend. So, this would be the lowest opening in franchise history since the 2006 film.

The good news is that it does look like Hobbs & Shaw will perform well overseas this weekend. Box Office Mojo reports that the film is estimated to gross about $120.7 million overseas with a No. 1 opening in 53 markets.

Hobbs & Shaw is now in theaters. The film stars Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Jason Statham. It also features an appearance from WWE Superstar Roman Reigns. You can check out 411’s official review of the film RIGHT HERE.
