According to Hollywood Reporter, Jake Gyllenhaal is in talks to play Mysterio in Sony and Marvel’s upcoming sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming. Mysterio’s real name is Quentin Beck. Beck is a special effects expert who creates illusions in order to commit crimes and battle Spider-Man.

The film will once again star Tom Holland as Spidey, with Jon Watts directing. Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers will write the script. The sequel arrives on July 5, 2019, after the release of Avengers 4.

Gyllenhaal almost played Spider-Man at one point in his career. After Tobey Maguire suffered a back injury while filming Seabiscuit, Gyllenhaal was in talks to replace him in Spider-Man 2. Of course, Maguire was eventually able to return to the role.
