James McAvoy Uncertain of How the X-Men Will Fit Into the MCU
James McAvoy has expressed uncertainty over how Marvel Studios will fold the X-Men into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. McAvoy, who has plays Charles Xavier in the last several X-Men films, spoke with Yahoo! Movies to promote the release of Glass this weekend. When asked how the X-Men may function in the MCU, the actor said he wasn’t sure.
“I don’t know if the X-Men could go into the Marvel universe, I’m not sure,” he said. “Maybe they could? But I think what’s different about the Avengers universe anyway is you’ve only got a couple of superheroes in the world. There’s a good amount, there’s like a couple of football teams’ worth, you know what I mean? Whereas in the X-Men world you’re potentially saying that there are hundreds of thousands, maybe millions of [superheroes] and the social implication of that is different.”
He continued, “So In the X-Men world, [superheroes] are ghetto-ised. They’re ostracised and they’re feared. Whereas in the Avengers world, they’re sort of honoured a bit more, I know there are times when they are shunned and vilified, but they’re generally more honoured and seen as heroes. We’re seen almost like immigrants that people are scared of in the world of mutants and humans. How do you resolve that?”
That said, McAvoy isn’t too worried about it. He noted, “They’re very clever, they’ve done [the MCU] very well, so I’m sure they’ll figure it out.”
With Disney’s takeover of Fox in the process of finishing up, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has said that he is looking forward to figuring out how to work the X-Men and Fantastic Four into the MCU. He said, “We’ve been told it’s looking very, very good and could happen in the first six months of next year…But in terms of actually thinking about it and actually planning things, we haven’t started that yet.”
