James Wan is an executive producer on Swamp Thing, and even he’s not sure why the series has been cancelled. Wan posted to Instagram to comment on the service’s decision to cancel the show, noting that he’s in the dark as well.

In the post, which you can see below, Wan says, “Don’t really know or understand why [Swamp Thing] was cancelled, but I can tell you this — all the cast and crew, and producing/writing team poured their hearts into this. Really proud of everyone’s hard work. Go watch episode 2, and immortalize these 10 episodes. Swampy deserves it.”

There were reports floating around that the cancellation may have had to do with a SNAFU regarding DC Universe not getting all of their promised tax rebate, but Guy Gasser, the director of the North Carolina Film Office, told Deadline that isn’t the case. “Some outlets used an unverified source,” Gasser said, “but if they even went straight to Twitter, where the report apparently first started, they would have found that the gentleman had nothing to back up his own claim … We found out just like everybody else. Yes, it was a disappointment. It comes with the business. We don’t necessarily get insights in advance… sometimes if a show is renewed sometimes we found out in advance of the studio announcement, but with cancellations we usually found out with everybody else.”

DC Universe has released a statement about the cancellation, confirming that there are no plans for a second season but not clarifying the decision. In the statement, the service seems to squash rumors that it is in trouble, stating that it continues to develop new shows, new seasons, new stories, more availability, and more platforms” and that more will be announced soon.

The statement reads:

Hi friends,

A million thanks for your patience. We understand this has not been an easy time for you as fans, and I will do my best to provide you with a satisfying answer.

First, some updates:

* The full 10 episode season of Swamp Thing will continue to air on DC Universe with new episodes released weekly. There are no current plans for a Season 2.

* We appreciate there are questions as to “why”, but unfortunately we are not in a position to answer at this time.

And now, the good news:

* DC Universe continues to develop new shows, new seasons, new stories, more availability, and more platforms. We’ve got a lot of exciting plans for our other shows in the works, and look forward to sharing more in the coming months.
