Jason Blum has confirmed that his Blumhouse Pictures will be producing a new Exorcist movie. Blum spoke with Den of Geek and confirmed reports that Blumhouse will produce the film, which will be a sequel to the original 1974 horror classic.

Blum suggested that the new film, which the article confirms is being developed by Halloween and Halloween Kills director David Gordon Green, will have a similar direction to those. While he didn’t outright say the film will ignore the previous sequels, he likened it to the other franchise, saying, “[It’s] going to be like David’s Halloween sequel. I think it’s going to pleasantly surprise all the skeptics out there. We had a lot of skeptics about Halloween and David turned them around, and I think he’s going to turn it around with The Exorcist.”

The Exorcist has had no shortage of follow-ups of a definite varying of quality. The Exorcist II: The Heretic was widely derided upon its release in 1977, followed by the better-received The Exorcist III in 1990. The series took a weird take after that with two different takes on a prequel story: Exorcist: The Beginning and Dominion: Prequel to The Exorcist. Dominion was the originally-filmed version, which was thrown out by Warner Bros. Pictures. The studio brought in Renny Harlin to overhaul and reshoot Dominion, which turned into Exorcist: The Beginning. There was also a television series, Fox’s The Exorcist which ran two seasons and was set in the same world as the original.

The Exorcist was the first horror film to be nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards and received 10 total nominations, winning for Best Screenplay and Best Sound. It has grossed $441.3 million worldwide to date, which includes a re-release in 2000.
