Deadline reports that Jeremy Irvine and Brian J. Smith have signed on as the leads for the upcoming USA Network TV series, Treadstone. The show is a planned TV spinoff of Universal’s Bourne franchise.

The show is created by Tim Kring and is being produced by Universal Cable Productions. The show will serve as the origin story and present-day actions for a CIA black ops program called Operation Treadstone – a covert program that uses behavior modification meds to turn recruits into near superhuman assassins.

The planned first season for the show will follow sleeper agents across the world as they are “awakened” to execute some very deadly missions.

Irvine is set to play J. Randolph Bentley, who is a spy dispatched by the CIA to eliminate a key target. Instead, he becomes embroiled in an international conspiracy. Smith plays Doug McKenna, an oil-rig worker who goes through some life changes after discovering some buried truths about his identity.

Kring is serving as executive producer for the show along with Ramin Bahrani, who is directing the pilot. Ben Smith and Jeffrey Weiner are also executive producing the show for Captivate. Dan Friedkin and Bradley Thomas will executive produce the series for Imperative Entertainment, with Justin Levy serving as the executive producer.

Production is slated to begin later in 2019.
