John Wick, The Wire Star Lance Reddick Passes Away

Lance Reddick, the actor who became known for his roles in the John Wick films, The Wire and more, has passed away. Deadline reports that Reddick passed away on Friday, with his representative confirming that he passed of natural causes. Reddick was 60 years old.

A proflific character actor who racked up over 100 roles over his 25 year career, Reddick as in the process of promoting John Wick: Chapter 4 this week, which he reprised his role as Charon for and which releases next Friday. He had also been set to star in the spinoff Ballerina.

Reddick began his career on television, with guest roles in New York Undercover, The Nanny, and The West Wing from 1996 to 1999. He also worked in film in the late 1990s with roles in Great Expectations and Godzilla, and did some TV movies. His first recurring role was on HBO’s prison drama Oz as undercover cop Johnny Basil, along with a recurring role on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit as Dr. Taylor.

It was with The Wire that Reddick broke out, appearing as Cedric Daniels. The criticially-acclaimed series was not a major hit, but it became a cultural touchstone after its run and Reddick earned high praise for his performances. Reddick continued to work on other projects during the show’s five-season run and followed that up with a main role on FOX’s sci-fi series Fringe as Phillip Broyles, the head of the Fringe division of Homeland Security that investigated unexplained events. Reddick earned two Saturn Award nominations for that role.

Following Fringe, Reddick as a member of the main cast of Prime Video’s Bosch where he earned his third Saturn Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. It was during that show’s run that he co-starred in John Wick as the concierge of the Continental Hotel, a safe haven for assassins. Reddick played the role in all four John Wick films to date.

He also voiced the role of Charon in the video game John Wick Hex in 2019, one of many voice roles he did for video games and animation. Among his voice acting credits are Commander Zavala in the Destiny games, Sylens in the Horizon franchise, the red dragon Thordak in The Legend of Vox Machina, Ra’s al Ghul in Beware The Batman, General Lunaris in the 2019 DuckTales reboot, and Falcon in The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

Reddick’s other film and TV credits include Corporate for Comedy Central, Alber Wesker in the 2002 Netflix Resident Evil series, Papa Legba in American Horror Story: Coven, Brother Kareem in One Night in Miami…, Benji Allen in the yet-to-be-released White Men Can’t Jump remake, and Secret Service Director David Gentry in Angel Has Fallen.
