Carrie is set to head to the prom again, with Mike Flanagan to serve as showrunner for a new Amazon MGM Studios series adaptation. Variety reports that the horror writer-director is writing and executive producing the series, which will bring Stephen King’s first novel back to screens.

The synopsis describes the series as a “bold and timely reimagining of the story of misfit high-schooler Carrie White, who has spent her life in seclusion with her domineering mother. After her father’s sudden and untimely death, Carrie finds herself contending with the alien landscape of public High School, a bullying scandal that shatters her community, and the emergence of mysterious telekinetic powers.”

This marks yet another Stephen King adaptation for Flanagan, who previously directed Doctor Sleep, Gerald’s Game, and the upcoming The Life of Chuck from King’s works. He has become the go-to for well-regarded horror television with shows like The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass, The Haunting Of Bly Manor, and The Fall of the House of Usher, all of which were at Netflix before he came to Amazon MGM in an overall deal.

King’s 1974 novel was previously brought to the big screen with Brian De Palma’s 1976 film, as well as Kimberly Peirce’s less well-regarded 2013 movie. The 1976 film inspired a sequel, The Rage: Carrie 2 which bombed in 1999. Carrie was also made into a TV movie starring Angela Bettis in 2002.
