Milla Jovovich and Betty Gabriel are set to star in Twilight of the Dead, the final film in the late George A. Romero’s zombie series. Deadline reports that Jovovich and Gabriel will topline the film, which sees the Romero estate teaming up with Roundtable for a final film from Romero’s ideas.

Brad Anderson (The Machinist) is directing the film, which was written by Joe Knetter, Robert Lucas, and Paolo Zelati based on a treatment Romero had written before he passed in 2017. It will be the final film in the series started with the iconic 1968 film Night Of the Living Dead which kickstarted the conception of zombies as we know them in pop culture today. Romero’s final film, Survival of the Dead, was the sixth film in the series.

The site describes the new film as set on a tropical island with a story that will “delve into the dark nature of humanity from the perspective of the last humans on Earth who are caught between factions of the undead.”

Greg Nicotero and company KNB EFX Group will create and lead the makeup effects on the film, which returns Jovovich to zombie territory after her stint in the Resident Evil franchise. Gabriel is known for her work in Get Out, The Purge: Election Year, Unfriended: Dark Web, It Lives Inside and the Jack Ryan TV series for Prime Video.

“I see this film in the same way as successful post-apocalyptic thrillers such as I Am Legend, A Quiet Place, The Road, and The Last of Us — genre stories that are as emotional as they are intense,” said Anderson. “When I first read Twilight of The Dead I teared up at the end. Which is weird for a film of this type. But it has that kind of pull, that combo of horror and heartbreak that I love.”

Romero’s wife Suzanne Desrocher-Romero, founder of the George A. Romero Foundation, added, “It is with great pleasure to work with my partners at Roundtable to finally get the last of George A Romero’s the Dead canon out to the fans. It’s what the fans have longed for and with Brad Anderson at the helm it will be sensational!”
