New Line Cinema Teases Friday The 13th Project With Social Media Post
Jason Voorhees is sliding back into New Line Cinema’s DMs, as the studio posted to social media today. New Line posted an iPhone screenshot that showed an Instagram notification that the iconic Friday the 13th slasher wanted to send a message, as you can see below.
The Friday the 13th franchise has been in limbo due to copyright issues, which started when original film writer Victor Miller used the the termination right of the 1976 Copyright Act to regain the rights to that film. Producer Sean S. Cunningham then sued, though the rights ultimately did revert back to Miller. This meant that while everything from the original film belonged to Miller, the elements of Jason Voorhees that were introduced in the later films such as the hockey mask, Voorhees himself being active and more belonged to Cunningham. However, since Voorhees was introduced in the original film, Cunningham couldn’t just jettison the original elements and start over.
It’s not yet clear what may be coming but as /Film pointed out, Cunningham recently teased in a Cameo that the 13th entry in the franchise (Freddy vs. Jason being the 11th and the 2009 Friday the 13th reboot being the 12th) would be coming in 2023.
