Squid Game: The Challenge Facing Potential Lawsuit Over Hypothermia & Nerve Damage Allegations
Netflix’s Squid Game: The Challenge is under threat from a lawsuit by two contestants who allege that they suffered hypothermia and nerve damage while filming the show. Deadline reports that the reality competition series, which is based on the megasmash Korean thriller series, has been threatened by legal action from the two contestants through a British personal injuries law firm.
Express Solicitors issued a press statement noted that it had sent letters of claim to Studio Lambert, who co-produced the series. The contestants claim that during the filming of the show’s opening game “Red Light, Green Light” at Cardington Studios in Bedfort, England they risked their health by having to stay still for long periods in order to stay in the competition. The game was filmed in the midst of a cold snap and Netflix has confirmed that of the 456 players, three needed medical attention.
Express Solicitors CEO Daniel Slade said, “We recognise people may see this as a classic David and Goliath battle with the company and its production partners. Contestants thought they were taking part in something fun and those injured did not expect to suffer as they did. Now they have been left with injuries after spending time being stuck in painful stress positions in cold temperatures.”
A spokesperson for the show said, “No lawsuit has been filed by any of the Squid Game contestants. We take the welfare of our contestants extremely seriously.”
It was reported back in February that the show faced an independent safety assessment after the medical incidents. Britain’s Health and Safety Executive gave producers a reminder to properly plan for risks but decided further action was needed.
The show premiered on Netflix on Thursday.
