Ben Affleck’s The Accountant was a sleeper hit in 2016, and Gavin O’Connor has confirmed that a sequel is on the way. O’Connor directed the film, which released in October of that year and overperformed with $155.2 million. And speaking with the ReelBlend podcast (per CinemaBlend, O’Connor has confirmed that he’s reteaming with Affleck and Jon Bernthal for a follow-up.
Asked if there would be a sequel to his film The Way Back (which also starred Affleck), O’Connor said, “There will not be a Way Back sequel, but we are doing an Accountant sequel. We literally just closed that deal. We’re doing The Accountant again.”
The film starred Affleck as a certified public accountant who is on the autism spectrum who makes his living fixing books for criminal and terrorist organizations. Bernthal played Affleck’s brother.
O’Connor continued, “I’ve always wanted to do three because what, the second one’s going to be more with — we’re going to integrate his brother into the story. So there’ll be more screen time for [Jon] Bernthal in the second one. And then the third movie’s going to be, I call it, ‘Rain Man on steroids.’ The third movie is going to be the two brothers, this odd couple. The third one is going be a buddy picture.”
