Warlock Was In Early Drafts For New Mutants, Was Planned For Sequel
One of the core components of the New Mutants comic isn’t in the film, but he was in early drafts and was planned for the potential sequel. Josh Boone revealed during the virtual panel for The New Mutants during Comic-Con@Home that there were plans to include the character in the first film but it didn’t pan out due to budgetary restraints.
“He was in all our early drafts,” Boone told Cinema Blend. “He was really in it until maybe six months before we shot, but he doubled our budget. It was just too expensive. The studio had a very hard place that they needed it to be at, financially, to launch [the movie]. And Warlock was what left in order to make it possible to make the movie.”
Boone added, “So our plan was always to put him in the second one. So I hope everybody watches the movie.”
Warlock is an alien entity comprised of techno-organic material who absorbs organic matter by infecting it to turn into its own techno-organic composition. A member of the Technarcy who fled his own people, he was a major part of the comic and had an iconic look thanks to artist Bill Sienkiewicz’ design that gave him a sketchy, out of control feel.
The New Mutants stars Maisie Williams, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Heaton, Alice Braga, Blu Hunt, and Henry Zaga and is based off of the comic book’s beloved “Demon Bear” arc. Disney is currently holding to an August 28th release date, but…we’ll see.
