Day 2 of CinemaCon in Las Vegas this week saw Warner Bros. at long last unveil the first footage and trailer for the latest installment of The Matrix franchise. The fourth film, now officially titled as The Matrix Resurrections, stars Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss, who reprise their respective roles as Neo and Trinity.

Plot details are still not completely clear. However, it appears Neo and Trinity are somehow still alive, or their consciousness still exist within the Matrix world. The Machine Empire still appears to be farming human beings for energy. It appears an older Neo has forgotten his identity and is seeing a psychiatrist, portrayed by Neil Patrick Harris. However, he’s given a red pill, and it appears he’s drawn back into the human vs. machine conflict. Neo still appears to have some of his enhanced abilities as well within The Matrix. How and why Neo and Trinity are still back and alive within the Matrix is not yet clear; along with what happened to the apparent peace between the Machine Empire and the human race.

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s character appears to share a strong resemblance to Laurence Fishburne’s Morpheus from the original trilogy. The sequel also stars Jessica Henwick, Jonathan Groff, Christina Ricci, Ellen Hollman, Toby Onwumere, Max Riemelt, Lambert Wilson, and Priyanka Chopra.

The movie is directed by Lana Wachowski from a script by Wachowski, David Mitchell and Aleksander Hemon, based on characters created by The Wachowskis. The Matrix: Resurrections will hit theaters on December 22.
