Zach Cregger To Write & Direct New Resident Evil Reboot
Barbarian writer-director Zach Cregger is set to take on the Resident Evil franchise with a new reboot. THR reports that Cregger is attached to write and direct a new take on the zombie survival horror video game franchise and that four studios are in a bidding war for the rights including Warner Bros. and Netflix.
The movie is set up at Constantin Film, who have had the screen rights since the 1990s and will produce as they have the previous films alongside PlayStation Productions. Shay Hattan, who worked on the script for John Wick: Chapter 4, will co-write with Cregger.
While the franchise has been a profitable one, the most recent film Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City was a critical and commercial flop when it released in December of 2021. Cregger’s name has studios interested in a new take, with Barbarian exciting horror fans and making big money at $45.4 million against a budget of just $4 million. His upcoming film is also a horror film, titled Weapons, and has reportedly tested very high with Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, Alden Ehrenreich, and Benedict Wong attached. He is also a producer on Companion, which has started with strong reviews ahead of its opening next weekend.
The director’s take is being described as a “revamp” that will return the film to its horror roots and be more faithful to the original games.
