Demi Lovato Comes Out As Non-Binary, Changes Pronouns to They/Them

May 19, 2021 | Posted by Jeremy Thomas

Demi Lovato has revealed that they are non-binary, announcing that they are changing their pronouns. The actor and pop star announced the news on the premiere episode of their 4D With Demi Lovato podcast, which is is produced by OBB Sound and released today. Lovato noted that their pronouns are they/their and said that the revelation came after “some healing and self-reflective work” that they’ve been doing over the past year and a half.

Lovato said, “Through this work, I’ve had the revelation that I identify as non-binary. With that said, I’ll be officially changing my pronouns to they / them. I feel that this best represents the fluidity I feel in my gender expression and allows me to feel most authentic and true to the person I both know I am, and am still discovering.”

Lovato got their start in entertainment as a child actor, first appearing on Barney & Friends and then in Disney Channel’s Camp Rock films. They are most well known for their music career, with seven six gold or platinum studio albums and hits like “This Is Me,” “Skyscraper,” “Cool for the Summer,” “Confident,” and “Sorry Not Sorry.” They have been open about their struggles with addiction and mental health, discussing both in YouTube documentary Dancing with the Devil which addressed their personal life including a near-fatal overdose in 2018.

They said on their podcast, “In 2018 when I overdosed, I feel like the reason why that happened was because I was ignoring my truth, and I was suppressing who I really am in order to please stylists, or team members, or this or that, or even fans that wanted me to be the sexy, feminine pop star in the, in the leotard and look a certain way, you know? I thought that was what I was supposed to be and now I just realize that it’s so much more important to live your truth than to ever suppress yourself because that’s the type of stuff that happens when you do.”

In a series of posts made to Twitter, Lovato noted:

“Every day we wake up, we are given another opportunity & chance to be who we want & wish to be. I’ve spent the majority of my life growing in front of all of you… you’ve seen the good, the bad, & everything in between. Not only has my life been a journey for myself, I was also living for those on the other side of the cameras. Today is a day I’m so happy to share more of my life with you all- I am proud to let you know that I identify as non-binary & will officially be changing my pronouns to they/them moving forward. This has come after a lot of healing & self-reflective work. I’m still learning & coming into myself, & I don’t claim to be an expert or a spokesperson. Sharing this with you now opens another level of vulnerability for me. I’m doing this for those out there that haven’t been able to share who they truly are with their loved ones. Please keep living in your truths & know I am sending so much love your way xox”
