As first reported by The Wrap, award-winning director and animator Genndy Tartakovsky revealed his next project: a new Conan the Barbarian animated series. The project is currently in the works from Tartakovsky and Cartoon Network Studios, and the series is slated to stream later on Prime Video.

The project was revealed in a pre-taped video message that was shown at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival. In the video, Tartakovsky reportedly joked that he’d be able to share some animatics for the project next year, and some rough animation about a year after that.

Tartakovsky first pitched an idea for an animated version of Robert E. Howard’s famous pulp character in 2008. 20 years later, it appears that it will finally come to fruition.

Details have also surfaced on the official logline for the series: “After finding love in the pirate queen, Bêlit, a battle-hardened Conan defies gods, fate, and even death to save her from a dark sorcery that threatens to destroy everything.”

The inclusion of Bêlit implies that the story will be heavily inspired by Howard’s original short story, “Queen of the Black Coast.” It looks like the narrative will expand upon the period where Conan travels with Bêlit aboard her ship, the Tigress.

Tartakovsky will executive produce the new animated series and serve as showrunner. He’ll be joined by Darrick Bachman, Fred Malmberg, and Mark Wheeler, who are also executive producing the project.

Genndy Tartakovsky Is finally developing a Conan the Barbarian Adaptation

Tartakovsky has cited Robert E. Howard and Conan the Barbarian as influences in the past, which can also be seen in his hit, Emmy-winning animated series, Primal. The show features battle-hardened caveman, Spear, who traverses a pulpy, fantasy-style version of prehistoric Earth.

This will also be Tartakovsky’s first time working on an established IP since his work on the Star Wars: Clone Wars animated shorts for Lucasfilm back in the 2000s. Tartakovsky is also reportedly attached to an animated Game of Thrones spin-off for HBO, although its current status is unclear.

This is not the only major adaptation of Howard’s iconic sword and sorcery character currently in the works. As previously reported, Arnold Schwarzenegger is set to return to the role of Conan in a new live-action King Conan movie, with Mission: Impossible filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie attached to write and direct the feature.

Tartakovsky’s Conan the Barbarian series does not have an official release date. Some official promotional artwork for the series, featuring the Cartoon Network Studios logo, was also released and can be seen below:
