411’s WWE Greatest Moments Report: SummerSlam in The 90s

-Makes sense they would do a SummerSlam themed episode. The 90s is a good decade to highlight as we start with the Hogan Era, end with The Attitude Era and have a New Generation in the middle.

10. Rage in The Cage
–SummerSlam 1990

-Warrior was the New WWF Champion and it made sense to have him wrestle the one guy who pinned him. The only issue is Warrior beat him a year earlier at SummerSlam and the match was stuck in the middle of the card because Hogan/Earthquake was the money drawing feud. It was a good match as Rude knew how to work with Warrior and they had that kind of freaky chemistry some people just have. Warrior gets the win to retain.

9. A Nasty Doomsday
–SummerSlam 1991

-Street Fight between LOD and The Nasty Boys. To think WCW had both these under contract just a few years earlier and let both get away. Not the greatest Street Fight, but a fun match and LOD win the WWF Tag Titles for the first time to a massive pop. SummerSlam 91 is a great show with a tremendous crowd and they just gave the fans happy moment after happy moment.

8. A Boiling Betrayal
–SummerSlam 1996

-Boiler Room Brawl! Cinematic wrestling before it really became a thing (we had a few of those in the 90s). It was a long brawl, but they get credit for something different and the ending with Bearer turning on Taker was shocking. Seeing that they wheeled in TVs for the fans to see around the ring shows how far we have come. Mankind was a made man from his run with Taker.

7. Harts of Steel
-SummerSlam 1994

-I just reviewed this show not long ago (it will be out in a few weeks) and this match was GREAT! Owen vs. Bret in a Cage and I loved the fact that they just kept going for the win. Bret thinks it is the best cage match he has ever had and I totally agree. Match is just amazing and had tremendous heat. Go watch it, if you haven’t seen it in awhile. Bret gets the win!

6. Three Men, One Throne
-SummerSlam 1999

-It’s Austin defending against HHH and Mankind with Jesse Ventura as the special ref. A lot of stuff with this one as it was once announced as HHH vs. Austin and then for a brief second, Chyna vs. Austin and then we ended up with the Three Way Match. The reason, Austin didn’t want to lose to HHH. So Mankind gets the win and transitions the title to HHH the next night on RAW.

5. Ladder of Success
-SummerSlam 1998

-Ladder Match: HHH vs. The Rock: The match that launched the careers of both men. Rock and HHH note they both wanted that spot. They rose up the card together and this match stole the show at MSG. HHH calls the match special. Yep yep! They delivered big time and were on their way to the top of the card. Rock just got there first.

4. Summer Lovin
-SummerSlam 1991

-This still makes me so happy! Randy Savage and Elizabeth marry on screen and I can’t help but smile. Hogan from 2020 notes that Savage was madly in love with Liz. Paul Heyman says people were craving that moment and Elizabeth delivered. Again it makes me smile but it also sucks that they are both gone. Mickie James calls it the greatest love story of all time in wrestling. I won’t argue!

3. A Hart of Perfection
-SummerSlam 1991

-Lot of SummerSlam 91 on here and as mentioned, it’s a tremendous show. Bret vs. Perfect. Bret: “I thought it was the best match on the card.” Yep. Prichard notes that Perfect is a bump machine and will make anyone look great. TJ Wilson says Perfect was the perfect opponent for Bret. Bret says Perfect put the torch in his hand that night. Bret gets his first singles Title and he is on his way up the card.

2. The Sequel
-SummerSlam 1995

-Shawn/Razor Ladder Match II: The first one is more influential, but this is actually a better match in my opinion. It built off the previous match and I loved how Razor slipped into heel Razor. Oh, and it was in Pittsburgh, but I was not there. Great match! Shawn gets the win back and they shake hands after the match.

1. A British Brawl
–SummerSlam 1992

-This was a pretty easy pick for the top spot. Bulldog vs. Bret in Wembley! Bret often calls this match his masterpiece as he carried Bulldog to an all-time classic. He notes here that it is one of his proudest moments. Great match with a tremendous setting an all-time great crowd. Easy choice for the top spot.

-This gave me all the nostalgia I needed. I could probably take a few minutes to think of something they missed but they covered most of the high points. I appreciated all the love for SummerSlam 1991. The Shawn chair shot to Taker and giving Bret the WWF Title in 97 is one that could have been included. That’s the only one I can think off of the top of my head, but they did rather well with this one. Thanks for reading!
