Leighty’s Retro Review: WWF SummerSlam 1992
-We have made it through the gauntlet of WCW shows and are back to the WWF. This is a big one as it is the first WWF PPV in the post Hulk Hogan world. Interesting that Vince lost his biggest babyface and the very next show, he headlines with two face vs. face matches. Also wondering if he worried about selling tickets with Hogan and thus decided to go across The Pond where he knew they would sell a ton of tickets. Let’s get to it!
-Announce Team: Vince McMahon and Bobby “The Brain” Heenan
-Wembley Stadium, London, England
-Aug 29, 1992
-Attendance: 80,355
-PPV Buys: 280,000
-Obviously this show has a tremendous look with the massive crowd and being a stadium without a roof. It makes for a great setting and I always liked the look for shows that start in daylight and end at night.
Money Inc (w/ Jimmy Hart) vs. The Legion of Doom (w/ Paul and Rocco)
-LOD make their way to the ring on motorcycles and I believe the story is that Hawk was drunk or messed up on something here. Dibiase is wearing his color rush white look. London is getting more NFL games, so they should get that reference at this point. Hawk and Dibiase start and Ted tries to stall on the floor, so Animal attacks and sends him back in. Clothesline sends Ted back to the floor and Animal hits another clothesline as we get a loud “LOD” chant. IRS in and so is Animal and that doesn’t go well for Irwin. Gorilla Press Slam gets a one count as Ted tries to rush in for the save. Animal goes to work on the arm and tags Hawk. He comes off the top with a forearm to the shoulder. IRS back with a sleeper as we get a look at Rocco. Hawk keeps the arm up on the third try and then runs Irwin into the corner to break. Running clothesline from Hawk. He heads up, but misses a clothesline and rolls to the floor. Ted gets a slam out there and runs Hawk into the apron. Quick tags from Money Inc as they double Hawk in the corner. IRS drops an elbow and another and a third for a two count. Power kick-out as well. Ted back in and runs Hawk into the top buckle. Back to Irwin and we get a reverse chinlock. Irwin and Ted switch off behind the ref’s back as Heenan notes they are close enough. It’s like my softball league where you don’t have to run bases if you hit a homer. Just saves time! Money Inc is trying to get people home a little earlier. Heenan: “I am not sure Hawk knows where he’s at right now?” Well, if rumors are true! They collide in the ring and the race is on, but Ted gets tagged in first. We get a “Hawk” chant as I have Over The Top flashbacks. Tag is finally made to Animal, but the ref was with IRS, so no face. Double clothesline leaves both men down and we have a second race to make the tag. Dibiase is first, but Animal gets a tag as well and runs wild to pop the crowd. Shoulder tackles for everyone! Double clothesline from Animal as Hawk goes back into the ring. IRS gets dumped to the floor. Ted eats a running clothesline in the corner. Doomsday Device is next, but IRS makes the save as the ref was with Jimmy Hart. No matter as Animal sends Dibiase into IRS to knock him off the apron and a powerslam gets the pin on Ted at 12:00.
Winner: The Legion of Doom via pin at 12:00
Just a basic tag match with a super, jacked crowd. This as what it needed to be and the fans were into it. **
-Mean Gene is backstage with Ric Flair, who doesn’t have a match tonight and Gene wonders why he is dressed for a match. Flair says he stays ready for any kind of action. The story is Mr. Perfect had been teasing to Savage and Warrior that he will be in the corner of one of the two men. It was a pretty genius move, kind of sucks they didn’t get Flair a match on this card. Flair continues the mind games and only says Perfect is “in the dressing room of the winner. Who else?” I mean, I guess he was telling the truth.
-Sean Mooney is backstage with Virgil who faces Nailz tonight. He is 2 Legit 2 Quit! The 90s, man! Love it!
Nailz vs. Virgil
-Nailz gets the already in the ring treatment while Virgil gets a proper entrance. Usually that would be a bad sign for Nailz, but Nailz is fresh off beating down Boss Man and Virgil is standing up for his friend. Nailz looks for a choke, but Virgil counters and hits a dropkick. Nailz doesn’t drop and goes to the eyes. He misses a clothesline and Virgil gets a roll-up for a two count. Nailz right back to the choke and he sends Virgil to the floor. In a nice touch Nailz leaves the ring by crawling under the bottom rope like it’s barded wire. I appreciate the little touch! Virgil fires up and gets the knees up to block a charge, but runs into a clothesline. Sleeper chokes Virgil out at 3:15.
Winner: Nailz via submission at 3:15
-It was short at least! 1/2*
-Nailz attacks Virgil with the night stick after the match.
-Lord Alfred Hayes is standing outside Randy Savage’s dressing room door as he is looking for Mr. Perfect.
-Over to Mean Gene, who is with Sensational Sherri. She has a thing for Shawn Michaels and Ric Martel and doesn’t want to see either man hurt, so they both agreed to no strikes to the face.
Shawn Michaels (w/ Sensational Sherri) vs. “The Model” Rick Martel
-Again, this rule for this one is they can’t hit each other in the face. Martel is ready for Wimbledon, though Vince steals my thunder by noting it happened a few weeks ago. We stall for a few minutes as Sherri takes Shawn’s chaps off. Martel controls early with a side headlock. Shawn shoves off and gets a series of leap frogs, so Martel hit s a cartwheel to upstage Shawn. Shawn ducks a clothesline and hits a dropkick. He looks at Sherri though, so Martel decks him from behind. He buries knees to the ribs but misses a cross-body from the middle ropes. Shawn goes to work on the arm and wrist. He pulls the hair and Martel kips up and threatens to throw a punch. Martel pulls the hair and Shawn kips up and threatens to throw the first punch. Heel/Heel matches can be fun when both guys are into it. SHawn gets dumped to the floor and the cameraman makes sure we get plenty of shots of Sherri’s ass as she is rocking ass-less chaps. Martel gives Sherri and hug and she likes it. Martel sends Shawn back into the ring. I chuckle as Heenan calls himself a heartthrob. Fantastic! Back in the ring Shawn gets a roll-up and uses the tights, but the ref catches him. Martel counters into one of his own and also uses the tights and also gets caught by the ref, and it goes back to Shawn to complete the running gag of both cheating and exposing the other’s ass. More cheating as Shawn uses the ropes on another pin. He argues with the ref and Martel with a roll-up and naturally he uses the tights. Shawn is pissed and they start trading slaps which has Sherri horrified. They nearly trade punches so Sherri passes out on the apron. We get some comedy as she takes a heck of a bump falling to the floor. They fight over who gets to help her as the match is basically done at this point. Martel does chest compressions, chest compressions, chest compressions (thanks Dr. Mike). Shawn gets in Martel’s face and they start trading right hands and fight up the aisle for a double count-out at 8:09.
Double Count-out at 8:09
-This was silly fun and the crowd enjoyed it. I loved them both cheating like crazy and then getting mad at the other guy for cheating. This was something different and I appreciated it. **3/4
-We aren’t done yet as we see that Sherri is faking and after taking a quick look, she faints again. Shawn carries her over his shoulder as officials hold Martel back. He breaks free and attacks Shawn and Sherri takes another bump. You can never say that woman didn’t give her all to the sport. Martel carries her up the aisle now, but Shawn decks her and poor Sherri takes another bump. I hope she got paid well! Shawn carries her again and this time Martel comes back with a bucket of water. The crowd is eating all of this up and Martel throws the water on Sherri as Heenan screams, “she’s alive.” Shawn takes off after Martel as Sherri is left screaming before running to the back as well.
-Sean Mooney is backstage with The Nasty Boys and Jimmy Hart and they are laughing their asses off at Sherri. Well, at least they are heels doing it. They rage about not having a Title shot after beating Savage and Warriorby count-out in the lead up to this show.
WWF World Tag Team Titles: The Natural Disasters (c) vs. The Beverly Brothers (w/ The Genius)
-Bell sounds and the Beverlys attack from behind. I mean, the bell did ring. Disasters use their size to turn the tide and squash the Beverlys with standing splashes. It settles down to Blake and Typhoon and that doesn’t go well for Blake. He is dumb enough to try a slam and actually, gets him up, but Typhoon falls back on him for a two count. We get a delay on the next spot as the timing seemed off, but it ends with Beau pulling Blake out of the way and Quake accidentally splashing Typhoon in the corner. That gets two as Typhoon kicks out with ease. Heenan informs us that Shawn Michaels has left Wembley Stadium. Some promoters out there would have been pissed! Leap Frog Splash from The Beverlys on Typhoon. They take turns trading off and choking Typhoon on the middle rope. Beau comes off the top with a double ax to the back. Blake uses the tag rope to choke behind the ref’s back. Vince tells Heenan to take his ridiculous crown off. Funny enough, Heenan ends up getting replaced by The King. Tag made to Quake, but the ref didn’t see it. This is classic tag formula, but just not all that interesting. Hard to get sympathy on someone as big as Typhoon. I’ll give the Beverlys credit for trading all they can though. Typhoon gets in a shot and then catches Blake, but Beau comes off the top with a dropkick and Blake falls on top for a two count. Beau pulls Quake to the floor which lets Blake use the scroll to blast Typhoon. Quake has had enough and just heads into the ring and drops an elbow on Blake. Both men down as it’s a race to make a tag. Beau in first, but here comes Quake to a good pop. He clubs away and throws Beau across the ring. Belly-to-belly suplex! He drives shoulders in the corner, but Blake is back in and Quake just runs them both down. Blake gets pitched to the floor and Beau is toast! Splash in the corner, powerslams, and Earthquake Butt Splash gets the pin at 10:23 to a big pop.
Winners and Still WWF Tag Team Champions: The Natural Disasters via pin at 10:23
-This was 8 minutes of Typhoon selling before Quake steamrolled The Beverly Brothers. Crowd was way into Quake though, which was cool to see. The crowd reaction for the final 90 seconds helped this one. **
-Gene is backstage with The Bushwhackers, for a comedy segment. The Bushwhackers were part of the 6 Man Tag that opened the show before the PPV started.
The Repo Man vs. Crush
-Not sure if someone has made this reference before, but DEMOLITION EXPLODES! Darsow never made the nWo B team, so I couldn’t do nWo explodes. Repo attacks, but Crush just stares him down and presses Repo a few times before dumping him with a Gorilla Press Slam. Repo bails to the floor and Crush runs him over with a clothesline. Clothesline misses, but he catches Repo trying a cross-body. He puts Repo on the top rope in the corner and kicks and punches away at his carcass. Backbreaker from Crush! Repo goes to the eyes He hits a belly-to-back suplex, but Crush is up and gets a belly-to-belly suplex. Another backbreaker and Crush heads up top. He misses a knee drop and it looks like we got some kind of weird camera cut as Crush is no selling punches from Repo. He goes to the eyes and then slams Crush face first into the mat for a two count. Repo sells the kick-out by going through the ropes and to the floor. Repo up top and Crush catches him with a powerslam on the way down. Cranium Crush finishes at 4:02.
Winner: Crush via submission at 4:02
-Apparently, they cut about a minute out of the match. Crush dominated this one and no sold nearly everything thrown at him. Probably should have been shorter. *
-Recap of Flair and Perfect playing mind games with Savage and Warrior. Again, the story is that Flair is playing Savage and Warrior against each other by stating both are trying to get Perfect to be in his corner.
WWF Championship: “Macho Man” Randy Savage (c) vs. The Ultimate Warrior
-These two had my match of the year for 1991 at WrestleMania VII. Perfect is nowhere to be found to start. Maybe he will come out later and Bobby can ask “whose side ie he on.” The sun is nearly set so we have cool looking sky for this one. Savage and Warrior stare each other down and the crowd is on fire for this. Savage wants a handshake and Warrior accepts. Neither man will let go though and they pie face each other before tearing off their jackets. Warrior is wearing the singlet with muscles air brushed on to cover for the fact his physique has shrunk. Hey man, if you need to get off the gas for your health, all good. It’s why Savage started wearing shirts and pants as well. It also made people think someone else was playing the part of the Warrior. Savage goes up top early, but Warrior catches him with a right hand to the gut on the way down. Atomic Drop and then an Inverted one for good measure. Vince: “Reverse piledrive.” What? Clothesline gets a two count. Warrior runs Savage down with a series of shoulder tackles but misses an elbow. Savage fires off punches and drops a knee as the crowd boos. Crowd is definitely leaning Warrior in this one, which probably works for the best as Savage can easily lean heel. Warrior throws haymakers in the corner and Savage sells them like death. That’s our Mach! Whip to the corner and Warrior stomps Savage down in the corner as the crowd counts along. Fickle fans! Clothesline gets another two count. Savage uses the tights to pull Warrior into the buckle (took two tries, but he got there). A clothesline sends Warrior to the floor and London is pissed. Wow! Savage sends Warrior back into the ring and gets a two count. He heads up top again and this time the double ax hits. Warrior no sells, so Savage goes up again. A second double axe and this time Warrior gets dropped and Savage gets two. Savage up again, but Warrior catches him this time and hits a backbreaker for two. Warrior continues to fire away with wild punches and then whips Savage back and forth between two corners of the ring. Bear hug but he releases quickly and just opts for a two count. Kind of weird! Warrior chant from the crowd as he gets a sidewalk slam for two. Savage with a flash small package for a two count. Warrior sets too early on a backdrop and Savage hits a swinging neckbreaker for two. He leaps over the top to drop Warrior throat first on the top rope and that gets a two count. More boos from the crowd! He goes for a suplex, but the back is injured and he crumples to the ground. Warrior goes after the back with right hands. Warrior is selling his beck as he fights to get a vertical suplex and it gets two. Warrior charges, but Savage goes south and Warrior spills to the floor. Savage up top and he hits a double ax. Sweet visual as it was shot from below and you could see the darkened sky above Savage’s head. Savage sends Warrior into the steps as he continues to lean heel for this one. He sends Warrior into the post and it was kind of weak looking. Back in the ring Savage gets a two count and here comes Ric Flair and Mr. Perfect. Savage gets a sunset flip for two, but Warrior is up first and gets a clothesline for two. Warrior with a slam as we continue to wait for Flair and Perfect to make that long walk down the aisle. Warrior tries his splash, but Savage gets the knees up and both men are down. Savage crawls over for the cover, but it only gets two. Double clothesline leaves both men down! Warrior has enough left to flop over for a two count. Savage then does the same. He goes to run the ropes, but Perfect grabs the leg and Vince is certain that Warrior sold out. Savage yells at Perfect, which lets Warrior recover and then land a heavy right hand. He lifts Savage off the mat with a two handed choke and then throws him across the ring. The ref takes a weak bump in the corner and even Heenan notes it didn’t catch him all that well. Warrior with a slam and he heads up top! Double ax from Warrior, but the ref is late getting there and it only gets two. Savage with a knee to the back which sends Warrior into the ref and this one wipes him out to the floor. Savage sticks Warrior with a piledriver, but we have no ref. Savage goes out after him, so Perfect helps Warrior get back to his feet and then Flair decks Warrior with brass knuckles. Now Heenan is convinced that Savage sold out. Vince is just confused! Savage with a slam and he heads up top and hits the elbow. He apparently didn’t learn his lesson from Mania VII as Warrior kicks out at two. Good near fall though! Warrior starts shaking and grabs hold of the ropes as the crowd is freaking out now. Savage just fires off punches in a desperate attempt to try anything. One right hand from Warrior drops him. Warrior hits a series of running clotheslines and then a flying shoulder tackle. Gorilla Press Slam, but after Perfect misses grabbing the leg, Flair decks Warrior with a chair to the back. Savage is trying to figure out why Warrior is out cold instead of going for the kill. That’s not the Macho Man we all know! Take the win and beat up Flair and Perfect later. He heads up top, but turns his attention to Flair and dives out at him. Flair has a chair in his hands though and that ends badly for Savage. Flair catches him in the knee and we get a count-out at 26:10.
Winner: The Ultimate Warrior via count-out at 26:10
-Very good match that was different than their all time classic at Mania. Amazing how Savage was always able to get epic out of Warrior. I know Savage like his matches planned out so that seems to be a style that was made for Warrior. The ending hurts though, but I enjoyed the mind games from Flair and Perfect and how Savage and Warrior each had to stay on their toes trying to figure out what was really happening. In the end the plan did work for Flair. ****
-Flair and Perfect immediately go after Savage’s knee as the plan all along was to weaken both men and in this case they went after Savage once he was assured of leaving with the WWF Championship. Warrior makes the save with a chair and then heads back to the ring where he presents Savage with his WWF Championship belt. Heenan: “clothesline him. Clothesline him.” Now, there have been rumors they wanted to turn Warrior here, but they went with this instead and it’s probably for the best as Warrior flaked out again not long after this match. Funny enough this is the only time Savage successfully defended his WWF Title on PPV and he lost the match.
-Gene is backstage with Flair and Perfect. Flair says he should have had the shot. Plan A may have slid by, but Plan B will get the job done. Flair tells the whole world and especially Savage, “that belt is coming back to me.” That would be a spoiler!
-Vince mentions the attendance is 80,355. I am sure that will hold up and nothing 30 years later will happen that will have people arguing over tickets sold vs. attendance and teaching us about drop counts.
Kamala (w/ Kim Chee and Dr. Harvey Wippleman) vs. The Undertaker (w/ Paul Bearer)
-Vince: “This is going to be a great matchup.” Well, we all have our own opinions. Taker makes his entrance on the back of a hearse. Yeah, that’s not terrifying at all! Just for fun from opening Gong to the bell ringing it was 2:42. Kamala tries to attack from behind and gets chopped in the throat. Taker chokes away in the corner and backs the ref off with a stare. Kamala reverses a whip but misses a splash. We get some kind of weird cut and sounds like commentary from Heenan edited in. Weird! Taker goes Old School and tries a second one, but Harvey gentle shakes the ropes and Taker falls to the mat. Kamala fires off chops and a clothesline sends Taker to then floor. He lands on his feet and goozles Harvey and Kim Chee, but Kamala makes the save. Taker gets bounced off the steps as they continue to brawl around the ring. Kamala with more chops which probably pissed Bret off in the back. Taker ducks a clothesline and gets a choke slam to pop the crowd. Leaping clothesline! Tombstone is next, but Kim Chee interferes for the DQ at 3:39.
Winner: The Undertake via DQ at 3:39
-Yuck! DQ following a count-out is certainly a choice. Add in the double count-out we had earlier in the show. Not much to this at all, but they wanted to continue the feud. DUD
-Kamala comes off the middle ropes and then the top rope with a splash. Taker sits up and Kamala shits a brick as he backs away in fear. As mentioned, this feud would continue!
-Sean Mooney is backstage with The Bulldog. Bulldog puts the blame for this match on Jack Tunney. He down plays how this is affecting the family.
-Gene is with Bret and he works well under pressure. He is annoyed Bulldog said he doesn’t know Bret when that bell rings. Bret has to point out he introduced Bulldog to Diana in the first place. So, Bret wanted Bulldog to come and thank him with a tear in his eye?
-Roddy Piper plays the bagpipes with a Highlander Band. Cool visual and Piper was probably all kinds of pleased to take part.
-Mooney interviews Diana Smith. Who would have guessed that 4 years later they would bring her back in a heel role?
WWF Intercontinental Championship: Bret “Hitman” Hart (c) vs. “The British Bulldog” Davey Boy Smith
-You know the story: if this show was in Washington DC it was going to be Bret vs. Shawn in a Ladder Match. Since they went with England, Bulldog gets the shot. As we will see in a few months, the belt was going to Shawn sooner than later. Lennox Lewis carries the UK Flag for Bulldog as he makes his entrance. You can certainly hear some boos from Bret, but he knew what the deal was based on the earlier interview. Vince thinks Bret is just as popular tonight as Bulldog. Yeah, no! Bret has stated that Bulldog wasn’t in the best mental for this match thanks to all the drugs. I think this is the first time I’ve watched this match since hearing that claim. Bret gets sent to the floor to start and he takes his time before getting back into the ring. Bret with a head lock, but Bulldog counters with a head scissors. They go again, but Bret blocks the head scissors this time. Bulldog shoves off and goes for a slam, but Bret rolls through and gets a roll-up for two. Bulldog with a small package for two and Bret right back to the headlock on the mat. Cool! Bulldog escapes and gets a hammerlock. He buries a knee to the back, but Bret gets to his feet and lands an elbow. Heenan: “right in the ole fish and chips.” Bret takes his chest first bump into the corner and Bulldog hooks an armbar. Bret misses a punch and Bulldog gets a crucifix for a two count. He goes right back to the armbar. He transitions into a wrist-lis and then back into an armbar as Bret rolls to his knees. Bret up and shoves Bulldog to the ropes. Bret shoves off and catches Bulldog with a knee to the gut and the crowd BOOS that. Bret soaks that up and then drops a leg. He hooks a reverse chinlock as they keep this one in a slower gear to start. Bulldog with elbows to escape, but gets caught with an elbow. Bulldog tries another crucifix but Bret is ready this time and gets a Samoan Drop for two. Back to the chinlock! Bret gets shoved off, but hits a shoulder block. Bulldog responds with a monkey flip and then delivers a headbutt. He sends Bret to the corner and then again before running into Bret’s boots in the corner. Bret hits a bulldog and Bobby can’t pass up the chance to comment on that pun. Bret up top, but Bulldog slams him down. He then heads up, but Bret rolls out of the way as Bulldog crashes to the mat. Bret uses Bulldog’s momentum to send him to the floor and again, the crowd is pissed! Bret just soaks it up as he nods his head. Bret sling shots out with a dive and Bulldog nearly gets folded in half as he was out of position. That was almost like a reverse bulldog. Bret sends Bulldog into the post to really drive home that he is the heel here. Bret goes to work on the back as he sends Bulldog into the corner. Side Russian Leg Sweep gets two! Bret fires off Euro Uppercuts and hits a dropkick. Backdrop sends Bulldog flying across the ring and that gets two. Bret hooks a reverse chinlock again to give Davey a chance to breath. With the crowd this invested they can afford to take their time. Nice snap suplex gets two! Back to the reverse chinlock! Bret throws a punch, but Bulldog counters and gets a backslide for two. You could see Bret call out that spot to him. Backbreaker followed by the send rope elbow. That gets two! Bret leans even more heel as he picks Bulldog up and slams him down by the hair. Props to Bret for fully embracing the dark side for this one. Hey, back to the reverse chinlock. Sleeper changes things up a bit! Bulldog gets to the ropes and Bret holds until five before breaking. Legal! Back to the sleeper! Bulldog runs him into the corner to break but Bret is right back on him. Bulldog knows this counter though and runs Bret into the corner again. The start trading punches and Bulldog gets an ugly Press Slam as he is out of position and drops Bret awkwardly on the top rope. Bret had to fight to make sure he landed somewhat okay on that one. Bulldog with another slam for a two count. Vertical Suplex and Bulldog makes Bret stay up there for a few seconds before bringing him down and that gets two. We have hit a higher gear with this match as Bret gets sent chest first into the buckle again. Bulldog gets two off that! The crowd is roaring as Heenan notes Bulldog is wasting too much time. Powerslam gets a huge reaction, but Bret is out at two and the crowd is stunned. Bret rolls to the apron and Bulldog wants a suplex, but Bret slides out and gets a sweet bridging German Suplex for two. Bulldog fights off a suplex and sets Bret up top. He brings him down with a top rope superplex and that gets two! Double clothesline leaves both men down! Bret actually hooks the sharpshooter from that position and that’s pretty sweet! Bulldog is lucky Vince is on commentary or a bell would be ringing right now. Bulldog gets to the ropes to force a break. Bret with a sunset flip attempt, but Bulldog counters as he shifts his weight forward to trap Bret for the pin to a monster pop at 25:40.
Winner and New WWF Intercontinental Champion: The British Bulldog via pin at 25:40
-So, when I reviewed this match 15 years ago, I stated it wasn’t the all time classic, greatest IC match of all time, like some claim. I also noted I thought Savage/Warrior was better. I will admit to being wrong on that last one as this was the better of the two matches and part of that is this one had a clean finish with a definitive winner. This was an all time performance from Bret as he got Bulldog through that one and leaned into being booed by the crowd. I still can’t go the full boat as it took some time to get going, but it never dragged because the crowd was so into it. That final seven minutes though was amazing. If you believe Bret’s claims, it’s amazing he got this match out of Bulldog. If you have this as greatest SummerSlam match or your favorite match of all time, I totally understand. I just wasn’t as into it as some of the other matches that have had that praise heaped on them. Still, a match every wrestling fan should so and more than worthy of closing the show. This match is probably what made up Vince’s mind that Bret was ready to be a World Champion. ****1/2
-Bulldog wants a handshake and Bret doesn’t accept at first, but gets over the bitterness and accepts to send everyone home happy. We get the hug with Diana and as it’s one big, happy family again. Great moment for Bulldog!
