Former IWGP Global Heavyweight Champion David Finlay is currently a free agent. His contract with New Japan Pro-Wrestling expired earlier this month. His final match for the company is set for tonight’s The New Beginning USA event, where he will take on Fred Rosser in a singles contest.

Ever since reports emerged that Finlay has been exploring opportunities in the United States of America, there have been discussions as to where he’d ultimately end up going. Fightful Select has reported in recent months about WWE’s interest in the German professional wrestler. The website recently noted that Finlay and WWE have been in contact, but there have since been no updates regarding that. Meanwhile, NJPW is reportedly trying to sign him to a new deal.

Amid this, there have been speculations that David Finlay may ultimately end up joining AEW. In the latest Q&A session with Fightful’s Sean Ross Sapp, a fan asked the wrestling insider if there is any truth to the claims that AEW is not interested in signing Finlay.

Sapp said that he won’t say that because if that were the case, then Finlay would have never appeared on AEW TV. Finlay has previously wrestled for the Tony Khan-led company. He made his AEW in-ring debut in June 2022, facing Adam Page in a losing cause. Sapp noted that David’s situation is not the same as EVIL’s or Toru Yano’s, whom Tony Khan is believed to not be a fan of. However, there is no indication as of today if AEW will approach Finlay for a deal.
