As noted, John Cena was utterly destroyed by Brock Lesnar last Saturday at WWE Wrestlepalooza. It was later reported by Bryan Alvarez that WWE doesn’t have another match planned between the two, and it will be Cena and Lesnar’s last match. During today’s Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer had more details on the tail end of John Cena’s farwell tour.
According to Meltzer, he was told that Cena is “very unselfish” about getting put over in his final matches, stating, “His [Cena’s] job is — he knows on the way out that he wants to make people.” Meltzer added that the finish at Wrestlepalooza was Cena’s call, “and that was his call.”
Meltzer noted that Cena’s loss is likely the result of Cena being the one who’s leaving soon, while Lesnar will be staying. He also speculated that WWE is likely setting up Lesnar to challenge Cody Rhodes for the WWE Championship.
Meltzer also addressed Cena publicly campaigning for a match against his old rival AJ Styles. According to Meltzer, Styles vs. Cena as one of Cena’s last matchups was “originally not the plan,” but Meltzer noted, “Originally, that was not the plan, but there are a lot of people who want to see it, and he [Cena] probably wants to do it. And look, if he wants to do it, it’s going to get done. He’s picking his opponents.”
Additionally, Meltzer stated that the reason Cena didn’t beat Sami Zayn recently on SmackDown is because Cena doesn’t want to hurt anyone’s standing as he winds down his WWE career. Cena has five more dates left in his WWE career, including matchups at WWE Crown Jewel Perth, Survivor Series, and Saturday Night’s Main Event in December. Saturday Night’s Main Event in Washington, DC in December will mark Cena’s last match.
