WWE Reportedly Not Booking Rematch Between John Cena & Brock Lesnar

At last weekend’s WWE Wrestlepalooza, Brock Lesnar destroyed John Cena, beating the former WWE Champion with multiple F-5s. The way it ended led to fans speculating on whether the plan is to run Brock Lesnar vs. John Cena back again in another rematch. As noted, PWInsider’s Dave Scherer speculated that WWE will set up a rematch between the two and that Lesnar could be Cena’s last opponent. However, Bryan Alvarez reported on yesterday’s edition of Wrestling Observer Live that this is not the case.
Alvarez noted he had the same thought that Lesnar could be Cena’s last opponent, as Cena would return to valiantly slay the beast. However, Alvarez stated that he was told that the match between Cena and Lesnar is the end of the feud, and no rematches between the two are being planned.
Alvarez said on WWE not planning a rematch between John Cena and Brock Lesnar, “Can he [Cena] climb that mountain and beat Brock on the way? Well, as of this weekend, I am told that this is it. There isn’t going to be another Brock Lesnar/John Cena match.” He continued, “That was their last match, and Brock is not his final opponent. So, I don’t know what to say now. I thought, why would you do a match like that unless, like John Cena is going to like climb that mountain afterwards, but apparently that’s not the plan. They just killed him.”
Alvarez speculated that WWE wants to set up Lesnar to receive another world title shot. He added, “So, I think Brock is probably going to be heading for a title shot or something like that.
John Cena currently has five more dates scheduled for his WWE retirement tour, including Crown Jewel Perth, Survivor Series, and his final match will take place at WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event in December. WWE has not yet announced who Cena’s final opponent will be.
