Brody King Reflects On Reaction To His Anti-ICE Stance, Says First Chant Caught Him Off Guard

Brody King recently shared his thoughts on the reaction to his stance against ICE and the anti-ICE chants that have broken out at AEW shows. The former AEW World Tag Team champion has been vocal in his opposition to the current administration’s use of ICE in pushing forward its immigration agenda. King’s opposition to the organization has led to “F**k ICE” chants breaking out on TV, most memorably during his match against MJF on AEW Dynamite in early February.
King spoke about the reaction both from fans and mainstream media in his conversation with Denise Salcado. He noted that to him it’s not a political matter; it’s a matter of right and wrong. He also noted that he was caught off guard at first by the chants. You can see the highlights below:
On Getting Support From Fans For Speaking Out:
“It has been great. And I feel like — you know, when I was younger, I always wanted somebody that felt like me on TV or wherever to express the way that they felt, so I can have someone to champion for me. And if I can be that for other people that are being marginalized, then I want to be that for them.
“You know, everyone tries to bring up the political thing. In my opinion, it’s just what’s right and what’s wrong. And there’s a lot of wrong happening in the world, and if I can speak out against it then I will.”
On If He Expected the Coverage He’s Received:
“Well it’s funny, because I wore the Abolish ICE shirt at Arena Mexico almost a year go now; I think it was June of last year. And the ‘F**k ICE’ chants happened this year, right before Australia. So it’s like, it got a lot of attention for the shirt. And then it out of nowhere kind of picked up more attention — I mean, obviously, the state of things gets more boiled over. People are frustrated, and that’s going to come out in certain ways. And you know, I can’t think of a more positive way for it to come out than them chanting it at a wrestling show.”
On What He Thought Hearing the Chants Before His Match With MJF:
“It took me off guard, but it also like — I felt like I could run through a wall at that moment. [laughs] And I feel like the way that MJF looked at that camera, he knew I was going to run through a wall as well.”
