Rey de Voladores Qualifier – Elimination Match
A-Kid vs. Omari vs. El Phantasmo vs. Ophidian

After burying him at “Chikarasaurus Rex: Flesh and Stone”, The Whisper is now wearing the skin of Ophidian and is going by that name. He feels he will be able to bring out the full potential of Ophidian. He and Kid chain wrestle to start. Kid takes the exchange by sending Ophidian to the floor with an alita. Omari denies Phantasmo’s handshake and applies a side headlock. He takes Phantasmo down with a shoulder block. Phantasmo evades Omari’s offense and snaps off a Frankensteiner. Omari responds with one of his own. Phantasmo taunts Omari with a test of strength request. They hold onto one another’s knuckles as they each monkey flip. Phantasmo walks the top rope into a Frankensteiner on Omari. Kid London Bridges both Ophidian and Phantasmo to the outside. Kid leaps to the top rope but is cut off by Ophidian. They fight on the apron. Omari dives over the both of them onto Phantasmo on the floor. Ophidian Spanish Flies Kid off the apron and onto both Omari and Phantasmo! Kid then comes off the top with a tope con hilo onto Ophidian and Omari. Phantasmo tightrope walks to the middle of the top rope and hits a moonsault to the floor onto everyone! In the ring, Phantasmo spins out Kid into a cut-throat neckbreaker. Omari gives Phantasmo a sideways snap suplex. Ophidian bounces off the ropes into double knees, driving Omari into the mat. All four competitors trade chops. Omari, Kid, and Phantasmo agree to all chop down Ophidian together. Phantasmo twists on Omari and Kid’s nipples. Ophidian brings out his yo-yo to hypnotize the three of them. He makes Omari eye rake and chokeslam Kid and Phantasmo! Ophidian then crucifix pins Omari for two. Kid springboard clotheslines Ophidian into a German suplex from Phantasmo. Phantasmo super Frankensteiner’s Omari onto a standing Ophidian! Phantasmo hits a Swanton Bomb. He misses the follow up moonsault. Kid sets him up on the middle rope for the 619. Kid hits a double jump Arabian Press on Phantasmo to eliminate him at 11:18. Kid swings Ophidian into a Northern Lights suplex, following up with a standing moonsault for two. Kid spikes Omari with a satellite DDT. A standing shooting star press gets Kid a two count. Ophidian drills Kid with a pump-handle Samoan drop. Ophidian drives his knees into Omari and Kid in opposite corners, until Omari cuts Ophidian off with an axe kick. Omari pops up Kid into a swinging Complete Shot, eliminating Kid at 13:25. Ophidian hits a corkscrew enzuigiri on Omari. Omari spears and axe kicks Ophidian in the corner. He clobbers Omari with a corner clothesline. Ophidian headstands on the top turnbuckle into a twisting senton. Omari recovers and blasts Ophidian with a dropkick. He goes for the Complete Shot, but Ophidian counters with the Egyptian Destroyer for the pin at 15:28. This was an action packed, energetic match to get the show off on the right foot. This was Omari’s opportunity to shine in front of his hometown crowd and he did just that. Phantasmo and A-Kid also made an impact, and the new Ophidian’s hypnosis spot helped to portray his character without hurting the overall match. Good stuff. ***¼

King of Trios 2017 Quarter-Final Round Match
House Calamari (Chris Brookes, Kid Lykos & ELIJAH) vs. Casa Dorada (Juan Francisco de Coronado, Sonny Defarge & Cornelius Crummels)

ELIJAH trips Coronado and goes for a deadlift German suplex. Coronado escapes but is dropkicked to the floor. ELIJAH dropkicks a charging Defarge and tags in Brookes. He drops his knee onto Defarge’s bicep before bringing in Lykos. They double hip toss Defarge into a wishbone snap, then Brookes uses his feet to launch Lykos into a vertical splash onto Defarge. Brookes gives Defarge a wet willie. Defarge reverses position and puts his ear wax into Brookes’ mouth! Crummels sneezes into his hand before chopping Brookes and then ELIJAH. Lykos, wearing a bodysuit, is not grossed out by the chop. Crummels however sneezes right into the mouth hole on Lykos’ mask! Coronado slams Lykos in the corner, allowing Casa Dorada to isolate him in their half of the ring. Lykos double dropkicks Crummels and Defarge off the apron as Coronado whips him to the corner. He cartwheels away to avoid a corner attack from Coronado and tags in ELIJAH. ELIJAH uses explosive offense onto Coronado. He catches Coronado on his shoulders and brings him down into a facebuster. Coronado blasts ELIJAH with a forearm strike and quickly backs him to the corner where Crummels and Defarge try a double back suplex. ELIJAH escapes out the back and tags in Brookes. Brookes double dragonscrew leg whips the pair. Brookes drops Coronado with Total Anarchy before pitching him to the floor. Brookes tope con hilo’s onto all of Casa Dorada. Lykos follows up with a step-up corkscrew press. In the ring, ELIJAH hits a Swanton Bomb onto Coronado. Defarge and Crummels interrupt the pin. They go for the super monkey flip, but ELIJAH escapes. Lykos assists ELIJAH with a crucifix driver. Brookes back sentons Defarge for two. Crummels drops ELIJAH with the Unprettier. Lykos Duat Driver’s Crummels into a dropkick from Brookes. Coronado gives Lykos the Tiger Driver for two. Brookes sends Defarge to the ropes, who rebounds with a huge lariat. Lykos knee strikes Defarge before signaling for a brainbuster. Defarge knees him to counter. Crummels and Defarge hit the Nightcap on Lykos before passing him into Coronado’s arms for a German suplex. Just in time, ELIJAH uses a senton splash to break Coronado’s bridging pin. ELIJAH sends Defarge and Crummels into one another, but Coronado cuts him off with an enzuigiri. Crummels and Defarge bring ELIJAH down with the super monkey flip for the pin at 10:57. I really appreciate that Casa Dorada won by being the better wrestlers, and not by cheating, as it makes all the difference in their credibility. CCK put in an admirable effort and had a terrific performance. It makes sense that ELIJAH, the replacement member of the team, would take the fall and allow the other CCK members to enter the tag gauntlet the next night as well. For me, this exceeded expectations. ***

Rey de Voladores Qualifier – Elimination Match
Chuck Mambo vs. Jody Fleisch vs. Red Eagle, Jr. vs. Sylverhawk

Fleisch and Eagle fight for position, evading one another’s offense. Eagle introduces Fleisch to the top turnbuckle, allowing him to land a high crossbody and a knuckle drag to send Fleisch outside. Sylverhawk heel trips Eagle. He goes over his back and dropkicks Eagle outside. Mambo takes down Sylverhawk with a casadora armdrag. He puts Sylverhawk into the Romero Special, dropping him face first out of it into the ring apron. Mambo sets up for the People’s Elbow, but has several elbow pads to dispose of, taking too long and allowing Sylverhawk to stand up. Sylverhawk agrees to lay back down, but then rolls outside. Flesich comes in from behind with a punch to the face. He ducks Mambo’s pump kick and delivers an enzuigiri. He spikes Mambo with a poison rana. Sylverhawk ducks Fleisch’s clothesline and suicide dives onto Mambo. Fleisch’s dive is cut off by Eagle, who tumbles onto Sylverhawk off the apron. Mambo hits a springboard somersault senton onto Eagle and Sylverhawk. Fleisch comes off the top with a shooting star press onto all three opponents. In the ring, Fleisch tries the Phoenix DDT on Sylverhawk. Sylverhawk halts it. He catches Eagle in his other arm. Mambo flies in with Chocolate Rain onto Fleisch, causing Fleisch to DDT both Sylverhawk and Eagle. Mambo gives Sylverhawk a Gory Bomb onto Fleisch. He then picks up Eagle in an inverted Gory Special. Eagle frees himself and victory rolls Mambo for the pin at 6:29. Sylverhawk comes off the top with a dropkick to both Fleisch and Eagle. Eagle ducks a clothesline from Sylverhawk and delivers a neckbreaker for two. Fleisch lands the Phoenix DDT onto Eagle, eliminating him at 7:50. Fleisch goes up and over Sylverhawk in the corner. Sylverhawk jumps to the top turnbuckle, only for Fleisch in one leap to bring him down with a super Frankensteiner. He goes for a springboard move but is caught mid-air with a Liger Bomb, earning Sylverhawk a nearfall. Sylverhawk walks up the ropes into a tope con hilo onto Fleisch on the floor. Sylverhawk hits the Cyber Splash back inside for an even closer nearfall. Fleisch cuts off Sylverhawk with a kick from the apron. He tries the Phoenix DDT but Sylverhawk blocks. Sylverhawk cannot block it the second time when Sylverhawk whips him to the corner, and the Phoenix DDT gets Fleisch the pin and victory at 10:26. Fleisch was the absolute stand out of the contest, with the match reaching it’s zenith when it came down to just him and Sylverhawk. Mambo added personality and Eagle was decent enough, but didn’t make much of a lasting impression. ***

King of Trios 2017 Quarter-Final Round Match
House SENDAI Girls (Meiko Satomura, DASH Chisako & Cassandra Miyagi) vs. House Seven Seas (Hermit Crab, Cajun Crawdad & Merlok)

Chisako stomps on Crab’s foot when he taunts her height. She throws a series of forearms. Crab hip tosses her. Chisako rolls away from an elbow and delivers a dropkick. Miyagi’s headbanging does not stop Crawdad from digging his pincer into her shoulder. Miyagi headbutts Crawdad to get him away, then boots him to the corner. Merlok frightens Miyagi, who decides to strike Merlok, but her fears are not assuaged when they have no effect. Merlock shoulder blocks her down. Chiasko tries her own hand at striking Merlok, but he absorbs it all, eventually powering her up into a running Samoan Drop. He drives Chisako into his corner where Crawdad and Crab assist Merlok in wearing her down. After grabbing the ropes to escape a Boston Crab, Chisako gives Hermit Crab and Ace Crusher and tags in the fresh Satomura. She unloads with chest kicks on Crab, putting the punctuation on it with an enzuigiri. She kicks away at Crawdad’s chest as well, ending with a DDT. She hits her cartwheel knee strike to the back of his neck. Chisako and Miyagi knock Merlok off of the apron, then knock down Crawdad and Crab with second turnbuckle dropkicks. Merlok sneaks in behind Miyagi, swinging her around in a full nelson position, knocking down Chisako and Satomura before dropping Miyagi out with a slam. Crab and Crawdad tell Merlok they have control of things before double chokeslamming Miyagi. Chisako stops the pin, but Crab gives her a spinebuster. Satomura makes the save this time and Pele kicks the Crab. Merlok saves Crab from a Death Valley Driver and strikes Satomura in the jaw. Satomura escapes a corner splash from Merlok. She fails to lift Merlok onto her shoulders and gets shoved down in the corner. Satomura side steps an attack, sending Merlok into the post and then the floor. She forearms Crawdad before muscling him up into a Death Valley Driver. Crab pulls her off of Crawdad to stop a pin. Chisako dropkicks Crab to the floor. Miyagi hits a super somersault senton onto Merlok and Crab on the floor, leaving Satomura to blast Crawdad with the Scorpio Rising at 10:05. They told a simple, yet effective story, where as long as the SENDAI Girls could keep Merlok at bay, they could best House Seven Seas. They did exactly that, allowing the veteran to clean up on Merlok’s partners while Miyagi and Chisako kept him down and out. A fun match to be sure, but not the type that really let the SENDAI Girls go all out either. **½

King of Trios 2017 Quarter-Final Round Match
The Furies (Fire Ant, Solo Darling & Travis Huckabee) vs. House Rot (Hallowicked, Frightmare & Kobald)

A brawl between all six competitors starts before the bell. Fire Ant and Frightmare fight into the crowd as the Rumblebees take it to Hallowicked and Kobald ringside. All competitors end up near a structural beam, which Fire Ant climbs and kick flips off of into a senton splash onto everybody! In the ring, Frightmare and Fire Ant exchange blows. Fire Ant takes down Frightmare with a brainbuster. Frightmare escapes a Yahtzee Kick. Hallowicked comes in from behind with a yakuza kick, and Kobald follows that with a spear. Just like that, the Legion of Rot are able to take back control and weaken the most seasoned member of the Furies triumvirate. Frightmare goes after the antennae briefly. Fire Ant escapes attacks from all three members of the Legion in the corner, sending them all to the floor. He suicide dives onto Frightmare and Hallowicked. Huckabee comes in with a Jon Woo dropkick and an uppercut to the shoulder blades of Kobald. He rolls Kobald into a Stretch Muffler. Hallowicked yakuza kicks Huckabee to break his partner free. Huckabee now finds himself a victim in the Legion of Rot half of the ring. Kobald tries Oleg’s corner splash, but it gave Huckabee time to counter the splash. Despite this, Kobald is able to deliver a Frankensteiner and running elbow drop for two. Huckabee is able to stack all three of them up in the corner and tag in Darling. Darling ducks their clothesline attempts. She takes down Frightmare with a Thesz Press after kicking out Kobald and Hallowicked’s hamstrings. Darling comes out of the corner with the Candy Crush (swinging bulldog) onto Hallowicked. Frightmare and Kobald peel her off the mat. Darling reverses their double suplex attempt with a double suplex of her own. She hip attacks them both off the apron. Hallowicked drops her with a Rydeen Bomb. Fire Ant comes in with a swinging Frankensteiner. Hallowicked reverses a whip and hits a step-up enzuigiri in the corner. He tries again in the opposite corner, but Fire Ant instead hits a tornado DDT. Frightmare pulls Fire Ant off of Hallowicked by his antennae. He’s passed off to Kobald for a Falcon Arrow. Hallowicked gives Fire Ant Go 2 Sleepy Hollow. Frightmare ends the series with a crucifix driver, but Fire Ant kicks out! Darling halts Hallowicked on the top turnbuckle. Frightmare jumps on her back. Darling hooks Hallowicked, so when Frightmare suplexes her off the middle rope, she superplexes Hallowicked! Kobald tries to kick a charging Huckabee. Instead, she catches him in a swinging Stretch Muffler. Darling puts him in the Sharp Stinger. Hallowicked picks her up and goes for Never Wake Up. Instead, Fire Ant enzuigiri’s Hallowicked into a German suplex from Darling. Huckabee butterfly suplexes him. Frightmare yakuza kicks the Rumblebees in opposite corners twice. Fire Ant Yahtzee kicks Frightmare after Frightmare suplexes Darling across the ring. He peppers Frightmare with open handed shots and a knee strike. Frightmare cuts him off with a yakuza kick and hits the Friggin’ Sweet Driver for two. Fire Ant kicks Frightmare away to stop Kneecolepsy. Fire Ant hits the Beach Break. The Rumblebees have Hallowicked and Kobald tied up so he can go for a pin, but instead Fire Ant hits another Beach Break. The referee warns Fire Ant if he doesn’t go for the pin, he’ll call for castigo excesivo. Fire Ant shoves the referee and hits Beach Break again, forcing the referee to call for the DQ at 17:23. The Rumblebees even come in to try and stop in when Fire Ant hits a Yahtzee Kick and a fourth Beach Break. The Rumblebees, the referee, and Bryce Remsburg corner Fire Ant until he has cooled off and Hallowicked and Kobald have brought Frightmare to the back.

Last year there was a castigo de excesivo in King of Trios and it bothered me because it was illogical. This to me makes perfect sense. The Furies exist specifically to stop Nazmaldun from rising again, Frightmare personally ended the lives of every other Colony member, and Fire Ant really doesn’t gain much from being a two time King of Trios winner. We even heard the Legion of Rot say they were coming after Fire Ant, so he had to be on the defensive, and his emotions catching up with him when he had Frightmare alone is something I can buy happening. The action and emotion created one very exciting package and produced a fun, engaging contest. ***¼

World of Sport Rules
Mike Quackenbush vs. Johnny Kidd

The match will be contested in five, three-minute rounds. Most World of Sport Rules conclude when a competitor scores 2 falls or a Knockout, but this match will be one fall to a finish. Millie McKenzie is the corner person for Kidd.

Round One: Kidd sends a message by immediately backing Quackenbush to the ropes. Quackenbush grabs a cravate, which Kidd escapes into a wristlock. Quackenbush pushes him down by the legs for a toe and ankle hold. Kidd maneuvers out and grabs Quackenbush’s legs. Quackenbush rolls forward. Kidd brings him down into a headscissors. Quackenbush counters into a Boston Crab. Kidd uses his leg strength to get Quackenbush in a pinning predicament, but Quackenbush reverses that, bringing them into the ropes. Kidd neck-ties Quackenbush from the apron as the first round concludes.

Round Two: Kidd hyperextends Quackenbush’s shoulder in a courting hold, converting into a straightjacket choke across the knees. He tries to pin Quackenbush in that position to no avail, so he uses his legs to try a European Clutch. Quackenbush sits back on it getting a two count. Kidd uses his head and legs to push out Quackenbush’s legs. Quackenbush puts his head and shoulders underneath the bridge and rolls Kidd outside. Quackenbush teases a dive, but decides against it. Kidd continually tries for a lateral press pin, but gives up and shakes Quackenbush’s hand when a pin seems futile. Kidd locks up his legs, but Quackenbush is saved by the end of the round.

Round Three: Quackenbush gets Kidd in an abdominal stretch, digging his elbow into his ribs for part of it. Kidd hip tosses his way free. He puts Quackenbush in a bear hug. Quackenbush gets down to the apron, gets his way through Kidd’s legs with his hands interlocked. Begrudgingly, Kidd let’s go and we’re back to a stand off. He pulls Quackenbush down into a bodyscissors. Quackenbush brings his knees down so that Quackenbush can apply pressure to the both of them. When Kidd sits up to alleviate pressure, Quackenbush throws his head back down. On the last occasion, Kidd is able to escape, but before he can grab Quackenbush, the round concludes.

Round Four: Kidd goes after Quackenbush’s collar. Quackenbush mares him to the ropes. Kidd gets a wristlock from the mat and comes up to his feet. Quackenbush pulls him down into a double arm stretch, manipulating Kidd’s fingers on his left arm. From the mat, Kidd claps his two feet around Quackenbush’s head. Kidd stretches Quackenbush across his knee, bringing his head down to the canvas. Quackenbush rolls the rest of his body down. Kidd grabs another wristlock. Quackenbush can’t believe Kidd kicked him in the chin to stop a reversal. Quackenbush rolls under and kicks the arm away right before round four concludes.

Round Five: Quackenbush refuses to be snapmared. Kidd baits him into it. He tries again, but Quackenbush arm whips him down. Kidd does damage to Quackenbush’s left knee before trying a horse collar. Kidd settles for a figure four. Quackenbush unlaces their legs and puts on a Trailer Hitch after a spinning toe hold. Saint rolls Quackenbush into a crucifix pin, but Quackenbush has his foot on the rope to break the pin. The end of the fifth round comes at 17:49 (including breaks), and the match concludes in a draw.

Mike Quackenbush says he didn’t come all this way for another draw. Kidd says he signed up for five rounds. Quackenbush says he knows, but the rounds have found a way to work against them. Kidd says they’ve worked against Quackenbush. Quackenbush suggests they go to one final round, no time limit, first fall takes it. Kidd shakes Quackenbush’s hand and we’re off.

Round Six: Kidd headbutts Quackenbush in the stomach and whips him to the corner. Quackenbush goes up and over and uses his legs to flip Kidd around. The pace picks up as he hits the ropes. Kidd catches him in a backslide for two. Quackenbush sends Kidd to the floor. Kidd comes back over the top rope. Quackenbush catches his boot and leans away from his punches. Quackenbush captures one of his legs and pulls Kidd down by both of his arms into a backslide for the pin at 1:16 (19:03 total.)

After the match, Quackenbush cuts a short promo saying Kidd was the better man and how they needed closure. The truth is, he needed closure, and he got it. This lacked the intensity of their previous encounter, but it told a good story. At the end of almost every round, Quackenbush was saved by the bell. Kidd was ready for a complex hold, a pin attempt, or to pick up that intensity, and just when he was about to, the time came where each man had to go to their corner and cool off. Quackenbush played his game the entire time. When Kidd accepted the final round, Quackenbush made Kidd play his game, by picking up the speed and positioning Kidd right where he needed him to be. This was a match Quackenbush needed to move on, to get catharsis, and you could hear the desperation in his voice as he asked for that final round. You could sense the accomplishment and relief in his body language when he finally pinned Kidd. That said, the extra round is perplexing when you consider their match last year was eight matches and this was only five, with no explanation as to why there was a change. I think the story here was a bit better than the first match, although you couldn’t have this story without the first match, but my perceived lack of intensity makes it ultimately fall short of its predecessor. ***½

King of Trios 2017 Quarter-Final Round Match
House Throwback (Dasher Hatfield, “Mr. Touchdown” Mark Angelosetti & Simon Grimm) vs. House Strong Style (Pete Dunne, Trent Seven & Tyler Bate)

Seven and Hatfield spend a lot of time twisting their mustaches. Bate and Grimm decide to join their partners, resulting in all four posing. Dunne grabs Grimm and Hatfield by their mustaches and sends them into one another. Angelosetti drives Dunne into the corner for a few tackles. Dunne leaps into a guillotine hammerlock. Angelosetti counters out into a suplex. Seven side steps Angelosetti and chops him up in the corner. Angelosetti gets his foot up to block the running overhand chop. Seven yanks Angelosetti off the top turnbuckle into a clothesline. Both Seven and Hatfield smack each other’s rear end in their exchange. Hatfield sends Seven out with a dropkick. Bate catches Hatfield with a knee strike and a diving uppercut off the middle turnbuckle. Grimm has a short violence party on Grimm, who pulls down Bate into a rear-naked choke. Dunne breaks the hold for his partner. He Tiger walks over Grimm, who brings down Dunne in a cross knee scissors. Seven breaks and goes for the short-arm lariat. Instead, Grimm uncorks Seven into a big boot and applies a guillotine choke. Bate and Dunne pull him outside. As House Throwback look for a triple dive, House Strong Style cuts them up with mustache pulls and a hand bite. Dunne wipes out Grimm with a suicide dive, so Hatfield suicide dives onto Seven. Angelosetti hits a corkscrew tope onto his partner’s, Dunne, and Seven. Bate hits a Superman plancha onto all other competitors. In the ring, Grimm and Bate airplane spin one another. Angelosetti and Dunne enter, leading to stereo airplane spins from Grimm and Bate. They wipe out Hatfield and Seven as they enter. Dunne and Angelosetti get dropped, and Bate Bops and Bangs Grimm. Angelosetti catches Bate with a reverse suplex. Seven uncorks a short-arm lariat on Angelosetti. Grimm knees Seven in the face before delivering a suplex. Dunne pedigrees Grimm to jeers. Hatfield overhead suplexes Dunne. Dunne rolls out. Hatfield misses a baseball slide and Dunne cracks him with a forearm strike. This leads a ripple effect where the competitors strike one another in a sequence on the other sides of the ring, circling back to Dunne and Hatfield knocking each other down simultaneously. All six men make it inside just before the twenty count. After a series of strikes amongst everyone, Grimm counters Bate’s Axe Bomber by rolling him into a cross armbreaker. Bate lifts him up into a German suplex. Dunne and Seven double release suplex Grimm and Bate gets two with a standing shooting star press. Seven overhand chops Angelosetti in the corner and sends Grimm into his stomach. Hatfield sends Seven into the corner. Dunne ascends the ropes. Hatfield climbs onto Seven and Grimm looking for the super Jackhammer. Instead, Bate hops up and brings Hatfield down with a super German suplex! Dunne stomps down Angelosetti aggressively in the corner. Angelosetti tackles Dunne into Seven! He hits Bate with the Flea Flicker. Bate rolls outside. The Throwbacks drop Seven with a double Complete Shot. Hatfield gives Dunne a Liger Bomb, then passes him off to Angelosetti for a Gallon Throw into Grimm’s European uppercut. Dunne gets his shoulder up before three. Mustache Mountain give stereo Pedigree’s to Grimm and Angelosetti on the apron! Seven dragon suplexes Hatfield before giving him Seventh Heaven. Bate looks to capitalize with but Hatfield gives him a Jackhammer. Dunne comes off the top with a double stomp to save. He drops Hatfield with the Bitter End for the pin at 15:39. This was another great, action packed match, but it’s the history between Hatfield and Mustache Mountain helped set this apart. Hatfield taking the fall also further cements his fall from grace. Simon Grimm deserves a lot of credit for working hard and playing his part to perfection in both of his matches this weekend. They got the crowd into a fever pitch with the nearfalls and ended at the perfect time. There was no better way to cap off the evening. ****

The final score: review Very Good
The 411
Night 2 was an improvement on Night 1 from almost every aspect. The matches were great, there was some good story advancement, and the special attraction of Kidd vs. Quackenbush. It's often said of King of Trios that Night 2 is the best night of the weekend, and this year was no exception.
