The Godfather Remembers the One Time He Beat Undertaker

From his earliest days in wrestling as the Soultaker, Charles Wright — now best known as the Godfather — simply looked like he’d be an ideal opponent for the Undertaker. His height, physique, and scary tattoos covering his arms (before that was more normal) gave him the appearance of a bigger, more evil challenger to “Big Evil.”

In real life, Wright and Mark Calaway have been fast friends for a long time. Professionally, they’ve faced off throughout Wright’s many gimmicks. Only one, though, actually scored the win.

On the Rewind Recap Relive podcast, Wright looked back on their friendship, and his lone victory.

“I met him in ‘ 87 and right away we became really good friends, and we’ve been friends ever since,” recalled Wright. “I don’t have a good record against the Undertaker. But I tell people I’ve been put in caskets as Papa Shango, as Kama, and I’ve been beat up as Godfather, Kama Mustafa. I’ve wrestled that man under five or six different gimmicks and I beat him one time…in a handicap match.”

“I came back to be Papa Shango, and when I get to TV, they made me Kama Mustafa,” he said. The character was a slight modification of his previous MMA-inspired character, Kama, now depicted as a Black militant to fill out Ron Simmons’ Nation of Domination faction.

“Just soon as I get to TV, they’re like, ‘Hey, change of plans.'” He said. “And me and Ron Simmons had a match. That’s the first time I met Ron Simmons, who’s a great friend of mine now. They say, ‘You and Ron Simmons are going to wrestle Undertaker, and you’re going to go over with a finish.’ And I’m like, ‘What?’ Yeah, that’s how that happened.”
