Gunther Reveals When Triple H Approached Him to Wrestle Goldberg, Gives His Thoughts on the Match

Former World Heavyweight Champion Gunther recently opened up about his match with Goldberg at Saturday Night’s Main Event last July.

The Ring General defeated Goldberg in the latter’s retirement in front of his home fans in Atlanta, Georgia. During a recent appearance on WWE Retrospective, Gunther revealed that Chief Content Officer Paul “Triple H” Levesque approached him for a match with Goldberg a year before it ultimately happened.

“When I came up in wrestling and stuff, and we watched like Goldberg matches and stuff, the most exciting part was always that something catastrophic could happen at any time. And I think that was kind of like the appeal, too, because it almost looked dangerous, because it was. I remember, actually, Hunter was asking me about it almost a year before, ‘Do you want to do that?’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, I want to wrestle Bill Goldberg, and I want to have the best match he maybe ever had.’ In that situation, the only thing I can do is give it my best and make sure it’s the best match possible.”

Gunther describes wrestling Goldberg a surreal moment for him

Gunther admitted that wrestling Goldberg was never on his agenda. Thus, it was a surreal moment for him to be the one to retire the WCW veteran.

The Austrian admitted that that match did a lot for his career. He also praised Goldberg’s performance in that match and claimed that the match exceeded expectations.

“I think that match did a lot for me and for my career, and I hope he can look back at it and be happy with the performance he put on that night because, like I said before, I think that I was very happy with that match, and that definitely exceeded expectations, I would say.”
