Jake Roberts Recalls His Issues with Chief Jay Strongbow

Jake Roberts on his issues with Chief Jay Strongbow: “I had some problems with a guy named Jay Strongbow… Well, I didn’t know it but he had come to Atlanta, or tried to come to Atlanta. And he called, he tried to come to work for people in Atlanta, and he was given to the booker. Well, the booker was Robert Fuller. He thought Robert Fuller was Jake Roberts. Robert Fuller told him, ‘Look, we don’t need some fat, overweight, f**king Italian playing the Indian.’ Yeah, so when I got there, he used to do some devilish s**t to me, man.”

On him trying to bury him: “So he would put me in the worst position to get over, and he would make me do 20 minutes to do it. So I’m having to go out and do 20 minutes with SD Jones, who will not let the snake get put on him. You know, I’m put in spots like that, I’m being put in the popcorn match. The match after intermission.”

On it hard being in the popcorn match: “Yes, it is [to get over]. Because people aren’t sitting there watching you. They’re still getting back to their seats and stuff. So that really screwed me over. And the message of going back to the office was, ‘He’s not getting over.’”

On confronting him: “I f**king blew up on him, man. One night, we were in the Meadowlands. And if I could have gotten on before intermission, I could have caught a flight home. And we weren’t getting home much. So I went to him at the beginning of the night, got there early and asked to be put on before intermission. I’m wrestling Joe Blow, an enhancement match. And he said, ‘Well, let me see what I can do.’

“Well, I walked out of the room. But as I walked out of the room, I forgot something, I turned around and walked back in just in time to hear him say, ‘If that motherf**ker thinks he’s getting on early, he’s got another thing f**king coming. I don’t forget s**t. He’ll [wrestle] after intermission.’ And I heard that s**t. So I’m like, ‘What the f**k is wrong with you? Man, why do you have it out for me?’ And he goes, ‘Oh, you don’t remember, do ya?’ ‘Remember what?’ ‘When you were booking in Atlanta, I called, tried to come in.’ And then he did the fat Indian bulls**t that Italian trying to play in India. I said, ‘That wasn’t me, man.’ And asked him what year it was, and I told him, ‘That’s Robert Fuller, not Jake Roberts, motherf**ker. [He said], ‘Oh f**k. I’m really sorry about that.”
