Hello everyone and welcome to 411mania’s LIVE coverage of WWE SummerSlam Night 2, I’m Robert Winfree and I’ll be your host. Night 1 was somewhere between high end of Average and lower Good, so let’s call it a 7/10 for the sake of conversation here. Night 2 isn’t quite as interesting on paper as Night 1 if we’re being honest, but does have a couple of potentially great matches. The main event isn’t one of them though, as Roman Reigns will defend his world title against Seth Rollins. Frankly I’m more than done with Shield lore and callbacks at this point, and that fact that Zilla Fatu is likely to debut here and cost Rollins just makes it even more eye roll worthy. Let’s get the other negatives out of the way, Trick Williams defends the US title against a recently returned Constable Fuckface Baron Corbin in a match that they didn’t even properly announce on TV until the go home show. Suffice it to say I don’t have high expectations. We’ve also go the old Vince Russo special, a Human Monies on a Pole match between Danhausen and Dominik Mysterio. That’s another one I’m not exactly frothing at the mouth to see. But the Intercontinental title match between Penta and Chad Gable should be a barn burner, it’s the culmination of a long story for Gable and those two have demonstrated great chemistry. There’s also Sami Zayn vs. Finn Balor for a shot at CM Punk’s WWE title, and a car crash ladder match for the interim WWE women’s title since champion Rhea Ripley is still out of action. So there’s highs and lows here on paper, now let’s hope the action delivers as we all get to take in Night 2 of WWE SummerSlam.
We do get a recap of the results from last night.
Before the first match starts here’s Smackdown GM Nick Aldis sporting a big shiner on his left eye, he’s back as GM since his match was concluded. So in an effort to call things down the middle he’s adding a participant to this match. Here’s Gunther to join things. Oh, just one more thing from Aldis after Gunther is in the ring. He’s got another participant to add, and here’s the returning Kevin Owens to join the chaos. Sami Zayn went from pissed to just speechless in a second.
Match #1 – Fatal 4-Way Number 1 Contender’s Match: Sami Zayn vs. Finn Balor vs. Gunther
Owens goes right after Gunther, then Balor, Sami’s just stunned in a corner while Owens unloads on Balor and Gunther with cannonball sentons. Now Owens stares down Sami, in kayfabe they were last seen killing each other in an Unsanctioned match, but they hug then start trading punches in a hockey fight. Clothesline from Owens then a senton to Sami, he clears the ring then climbs up top and does a Swanton dive onto the pile of bodies. Owens tosses Gunther back in the ring then hits him with a Swanton Bomb. Gunther counters a Stunner into a Sleeper hold, Sami shows up to break that up. Balor’s here but Gunther boots him down, boots Owens to the floor, then starts drilling Sami with knees to the body and a Kobashi style downward chop. Balor now attacks Gunther and hits an Eye of the Hurricane. Gunther chops Balor down, but then he runs into a Sling Blade. Balor with a Sling Blade to Sami, then he shotgun dropkicks Sami into Gunther, heads up top but Gunther avoids the Coup de Grace then hits his own shotgun dropkick. Folding powerbomb from Gunther, Balor kicks out but Gunther tuns that into a Boston Crab and Owens has to show up and attack Gunther. Owens stomps a mudhole into Gunther but then runs into a boot only to fire back with a clothesline. Again Owens goes up top but Balor catches him with a gamen giri then he climbs up with him but you can’t superplex Kevin Owens silly Balor, and Owens with the avalanche Fisherman’s Buster.
Sami shows up to toss Sami out of the ring then covers Balor for 2. Sami puts Balor up top and climbs up with him, Balor punches Sami down but here’s Owens to knock Balor off the top to the floor. Owens up top but Sami gets the knees up to block a Swanton Bomb. Owens is down clutching the back of his neck, Sami seems a tad conflicted for a second but then tries a Helluva Kick, Gunther intercepts though with a Sleeper. Balor shows back up, Coup de Grace to Sami to break the hold and he covers Sami but Gunther just barely breaks up that pin at the last second, he barely even got to that one. Gunther chops Balor then grabs a Sleeper, Balor with the Hitman counter for 2. Owens shows up, Stunners for Balor and Gunther but Sami counters one into a Blue Thunder Bomb for a near fall. Sami lines up a Helluva Kick on Owens but runs into a superkick, then Owens hits a Stunner for the win.
OFFICIAL RESULT: Kevin Owens won in 8:32
Rating: 3.5 stars
Thoughts: Heck of a sprint there, the art of a sprint at big events is kind of a dying one but these four knew how to make it work. Just a blistering pace from all four men, the addition of Gunther and Owens was unexpected but will fuel Sami’s whining and Owens in particular will add the eternal texture of his rivalry with Sami to things.
Post match Sami looks like he’s about to burst into tears as Owens celebrates.
Check the finish HERE.
Baron Corbin heads to the ring, I still don’t care for his music. He’s followed by Lil Yachty who introduces US champion Trick Williams.
Match #2 – US Title Match: (c) Trick Williams w/ Lil Yachty vs. Baron Corbin
Trick attacks at the bell and hits a Flapjack. Backhand to Corbin then corner stomps. Trick clotheslines Corbin out of the ring then follows him and rams him into a barricade. Next Trick gets a table, a Slim Jim table even, and sets it up on the floor. Corbin heads into the ring, Trick follows but Corbin rolls out of the ring on the other side to keep buying time. Trick charges at Corbin but runs into a Deep Six on the floor. The ref counts to 5 then Corbin heads back out of the ring to attack Trick and ram him into a ring post as well as the ring steps. Back in the ring Corbin with mounted punches and elbows. Some poor camera work, the zooming in and out reminds me of that Bucky Beaver fellow Kevin Dunn’s bad habits. Corbin keeps control and unloads with strikes on the mat. There’s some blood coming from somewhere, it’s not bad but is visible on the hands of Trick. Trick rolls to the apron and both men trade elbows for a bit before Corbin rakes the eyes to keep control.
On the floor now Yachty gets pie faced by Corbin into the barricade. Yachty gets the kendo stick and chases Corbin back into the ring, where he misses a corner attack. Trick with a back elbow then a neckbreaker. Side kicks from Trick then a Book End for a 2 count. Corbin fights off the shoulders of Trick with some eye rakes, then he waits around so Yachty can get into position to whack him then Trick hits a sit out Death Valley Driver, I think that’s just a Samoan Driver, for a 2 count. Corbin avoids a Trick Shot and boots Trick then tries End of Days but Trick flips through and hits the tornado pump kick for another 2 count. Trick lines up another Trick Shot, Corbin avoids it though then snaps Trick over the top rope. Corbin takes that silly fluffy belt, Yachty tries to take it form him on the apron, Trick then shoves Corbin who knocks Yachty off the apron onto the table which does not break. The ref is distracted by all that so Corbin can land a belt shot then the End of Days to win.
OFFICIAL RESULT: Baron Corbin won the title in 9:13
Rating: 2 stars
Thoughts: Pretty heatless affair and a sad way to end a title run that unfortunately never felt like it hit second gear from Trick. Having to wait around for Yachty to do the kendo stick spot, the table not breaking, Corbin still being the same guy as before, it all leads to a pretty lackluster affair.

Match #3 – 5 Way Interim WWE Women’s Title Ladder Match: Jade Cargill vs. Charlotte Flair vs. Lash Legend vs. Tiffany Stratton vs. Chelsea Green
Jade, rocking what I think is Zatana inspired gear, attack Charlotte during Charlotte’s entrance and they brawl on the floor for a bit. Tiffany jumps at Lash on the floor but gets caught and thrown onto a ladder. Green tries a suicide dive at Lash but Lash catches her and chokeslams her onto the upright ladder. Well we know who’s getting the Big Dawn era Roman “make ’em look strong” treatment. Lash tosses Green into the crowd then tries to set up a ladder but Charlotte shows up and chops at her then tries a walk over clothesline but Lash just absorbs it then hits a scoop slam onto a ladder. Jade shows up as Charlotte rolls out of the ring, Jade and Lash square up now. Tiffany and Green show up with a ladder, they land stereo superkicks then team up to attack Jade and Lash. Stereo 10 punches, Lash and Jade then shove them down and hit stereo pump kicks. German suplex from Jade to Lash to send Lash out of the ring, Charlotte then hits a crossbody. Charlotte gets a ladder and whacks Jade out of the ring with it, Lash shows up and drops Charlotte with a Military Press. Lash sets up a ladder, Tiffany shows up to hit a Codebreaker though.
Charlotte and Tiffany stare down now then get to trading strikes, eventually Charlotte drops Tiffany face first onto a ladder that’s set up between the ropes in a corner. Green shows up with a dropkick to Charlotte and Tiffany then drops Charlotte onto the ladder. Green tries to climb the ladder, but Jade shows up to pull her down and hit Jaded onto that bridged ladder. Jade climbs, Tiffany shows up though to block that. Tiffany avoids a chokeslam and hits a Backstabber, now Tiffany climbs but Charlotte complicates things. Charlotte climbs up with Tiffany while Lash brings another ladder into the ring. Charlotte walks into the ladder Lash has and sells like death, Tiffany then shoves Lash into the corner by the ladder and bounces Lash onto it. The ladder is again set up between the ropes, Lash then hits a pop up spinebuster kind of move to drop Tiffany onto the bridged ladder, that bump had to SUCK. Lash takes a boot from Charlotte, Charlotte climbs the ladder and gets way up there before Jade shows up to pull the ladder out from under her leaving Charlotte hanging from the belt. Jade and Lash pull Charlotte down, Jade then rams Charlotte into Lash and tosses Charlotte into a cornered ladder. Lash then pump kicks Jade down and climbs, but Tiffany climbs back up to attack Lash. Tiffany punches Lash down, Lash with the oddest and most accommodating drop ever. Lash then pulls Tiffany down but Tiffany hits her with a hurricanrana to send Lash into a cornered ladder. Tiffany climbs again, reaches for the belt but here’s Green. Green shoves the ladder over to toss Tiffany onto the pile of three other women.
Green sets up a ladder and climbs, the crowd is hugely with her, but here come B-Fab and Michin to make everything worse. Michin and B-Fab yank Green down and stomp on her for a bit. The flunkies then help Jade back into the ring, a second ladder is set up next to the first and they help Jade climb. Charlotte shows back up to dispose of Michin and B-Fab then climb up with Jade. Jade and Charlotte trade punches, Lash and Tiffany set up a third ladder and climb up to trade more punches. Green is still trapped upside down on the middle ladder. Lash and Tiffany get tossed, Charlotte then stops Jade getting the belt and falls down with Jade leaving Green alone in the ring again. Green climbs again and gets the belt to win!
OFFICIAL RESULT: Chelsea Green won the interim WWE women’s title in 13:04
Rating: 3.5 stars
Thoughts: Some gnarly bumps from Tiffany helped elevate this, as did the surprise win for Green but it was such a feel good moment it had to push this a little higher. I don’t think Green has much of a prayer against Rhea Ripley if she holds the interim belt long enough, but this definitely was a feel good moment. A few bits of awkward work, Lash in particular is still pretty good on offense but struggles mightily with connective tissue. She also had to sprint around to be in position for that Tiffany dive spot off the ladder and it just looked silly.

They actually do the bit where we rewatch stuff that already happened with other commentary teams. Good grief, that’s a stupid bit.
Match #4 – Human Monies on a Pole Match: Danhausen vs. Dominik Mysterio
Dom attacks then climbs the corner for the money, Danhausen stops that and lands punches. Both men take turns trying to climb, Dom then kicks Danhausen into a 619 position but misses the blow. Release Northern Lights Suplex from Danhausen then some corner clotheslines but he mises one and Dom levels him with a clothesline. Corner stomps from Dom, then Dom climbs but Danhausen blocks that. Dom with the 3 Amigos but Danhausen avoids the last one and hits a Danhausen Death Drop to put both men down. Danhausen climbs the corner, but of course here’s JD McDonagh and his enormous head to attack Danhausen. Moonsault from JD. The minihausens show up to attack JD, JD handles them for a bit but one of them hits a springboard headbutt to drop JD then follows with a satellite DDT. The minis try to form Voltron and climb the pole, Dom shows up though to end that bit of chicanery. The mini who can wrestle hits Dom with a diving hurricanrana then a flipping suicide dive on the floor for, apparently, Toritohausen.
Danhausen goes for the money again, JD recovers and headbutts him down though. JD tosses Danhausen then restrains him, but here’s Joe Hendry to even the odds. Hendry’s got a guitar and El Kabong’s JD. Danhasuen and Dom race for the money, Dom kicks Danhausen then gets caught on the top rope. Both men fight on the top rope now, and ultimately Danhasuen gets crotched but he curses Dom so fireworks go off and scald Dom. Danhausen then gets the money to win.
OFFICIAL RESULT: Danhausen won in 6:50
Rating: 2.5 stars
Thoughts: I was prepared to really hate this, and while it wasn’t to my personal tastes this was pretty short, well paced, and mercifully understood the short assignment. I don’t need Danhausen every event and there’s a real argument he’s getting overexposed a bit. But the crowd was into this, and it checked the boxes it needed to. For doing exactly what it was supposed to I can’t knock this too badly.
Post match Danhausen throws money to the crowd, some of them are singles and some are Danhausen’s fake money.

Match #5 – Intercontinental Title Match: (c) Penta vs. Chad Gable
Both men go face to face, they shake hands but there’s respectful heat to it. Both men try tie ups, Gable then moves into an Ankle Lock but Penta rolls through into a cover for 2. Head scissors from Penta, Gable then with a Russian leg sweep and a Rolling Thunder kick. Gable charges, but runs into a thrust kick from Penta who then hits a face buster. Penta catches a rushing Gable and hits a backbreaker for a 2 count. Chop from Penta, then Gable avoids a Penta Driver and hits a German suplex but holds the grip for more German suplexes, he hits 3 concluding with a bridging German that gets 2. Penta misdirects the bad shoulder of Gable into the ring corner, Gable avoids a Backstabber then runs over Penta and tries a moonsault but Penta intercepts with a superkick for another 2 count. Corner combination from Penta but Gable blocks the mule kick and grabs an Ankle Lock for a few seconds before Penta sends him out of the ring then follows with a tope con hilo and both men are down. Gable is still selling the left shoulder after that landing. Back in the ring Penta hits a Penta Driver for a near fall.
Chop from Penta and he calls on Gable who punches him back. They start trading chops now and that turns into a superkick from Penta, but Gable catches a charging Penta with an overhead belly to belly throw into the corner for a 2 count. Looks like Gable has a small cut on his forehead. Gable heads up top but Penta turns a diving headbutt into a Sacrifice on the bad left arm but he only finds another near fall on the pin. Penta, no afraid to exploit a weakness, starts kicking the bad arm. Penta apologizes but still hits a superkick then tries the Mexican Destroyer but Gable counters into an Ankle Lock. Gable can’t hold the lock and Penta corners him but Gable grabs an armbar over the ropes for nearly the 5 count. Kick to the body from Penta then he tries an apron Mexican Destroyer but Gable counters into a gnarly looking German suplex on the apron. Now Gable climbs up top, and moonsaults onto Penta on the floor. Back in the ring Gable up top for the diving headbutt but he only finds his own near fall as his left shoulder is still compromising his offense. Gable puts Penta up top and climbs up with him, he wants a big superplex but Penta headbutts him to the apron then hits the Mexican Destroyer on the apron, not a great looking one but good enough. Back in the ring Penta covers but only gets a near fall.
Penta wants another Destroyer but Gable counters into another Ankle Lock. Penta scrambles but he’s caught, Gable pulls him away from the ropes and cranks it. Gable grapevines the leg and that gets Penta to tap out.
OFFICIAL RESULT: Chad Gable won the title in 11:06
Rating: 3.5 stars
Thoughts: I really expected more here, this felt like it needed another 6-8 minutes to really get the crowd into the biggest possible frenzy. This was still quite good but not the classic that it feels like these two could have put on. Penta and Gable still work well, the doubt around the shoulder from Gable was a nice touch. The emotional story concluding here was great but I just kind of wish they’d been really allowed the time to get going.
Post match Gable is in tears with the belt, and Penta pulls him to his feet then takes the belt and puts it around Gable’s waist before raising his arm. The two men embrace and Penta celebrates with Gable for a second before leaving so Gable can celebrate with his family. Gable gets a mic, he introduces himself and reminds us that he was born and raised and still lives in Minneapolis. He puts over his family then poses with the belt as pyro goes off.

Entirely expected but Seth starts his entrance with the old Shield radio bit before switching to his usual atonal medley. Good God, Seth’s gear is hurting my eyes. Roman, lamentably, doesn’t do anything cool with his entrance. Seth’s carrying a Shield face mask, because it’ll be relevant later I guess.
Match #6 – World Heavyweight Title Match: (c) Roman Reigns vs. Seth Rollins
Almost 30 minutes between matches, no bueno. Seth offers a white tactical vest to Roman, because the psychosexual drama must be forefront with these two. Some trash talk from both men, then nothing sells a hated rivalry like the old collar and elbow tie up. Roman pushes Seth into a corner then shoves him as he gives a clean break. Another tie up, Seth misdirects Roman into the corner then paint brushes him a bit before breaking. Another tie up, Seth grabs a side headlock then tries a shoulder block but Roman knocks him over and poses. Some rope running, then Seth hits a Sling Blade. Roman gets over anxious and Seth starts landing some strikes, he’s quicker than Roman and makes him miss then counters. Seth tries a 10 punch but Roman shoves him down then levels him with clotheslines, misses a leaping clothesline then Seth with a kick to the knee and superkick to keep control.
Corner attack from Seth, but he misses a second and Roman drops him with a jumping clothesline. Corner clotheslines from Roman, then a running boot. Roman lines up a Superman punch, Seth counters into a rolling elbow then clotheslines Roman out of the ring and he follows with a suicide dive. Another suicide dive from Seth, man he’s moving slowly for these, he hits a third when Roman wanders over in front of commentary. Seth takes apart the Spanish announce table, then goes for another suicide dive but Roman intercepts with a right hand. Drive By kick from Roman then he clotheslines Seth into the crowd. Roman follows Seth and gets to brawling because he’s the better brawler of the two. They brawl around the fans for a bit, Seth hits Roman with a stand then Roman responds by suplexing Seth on the floor. They’re by the time keeper’s area, Roman tries a Spear but Seth intercepts with a knee, then lands a leaping knee to send both men into the ringside area.
Seth has Roman against the barricade and tries a Spear, Roman counters and powerbombs Seth through the Spanish announce desk. Roman now takes apart the other commentary table, he wants another powerbomb but Seth counters this one into his own powerbomb through the table. Both men are down on the floor, by all rights this should have been counted out a while ago but now the ref finally starts counting with both men down. They both beat the 10 count, Seth then hits a Pedigree for a near fall. The crowd think this is awesome, demonstrating a lack of discernment. Seth wants a Stomp, Roman intercepts with a Superman punch for a 2 count.
They’re both down for a bit, then Roman gets up and rallies the crowd to call for a Spear which of course Seth leaps over then Seth with a Stomp but only another near fall. Seth puts Roman up top then climbs up with him, he wants the superplex but Roman fights back with body blows and a headbutt to drop Seth. Seth, who cares not for selling, jumps back up and Roman politely gets into superplex position, Seth tries to roll through into the Falcon Arrow but Roman counters into a Guillotine Choke. Roman cranks the choke and jumps guard with it. Seth fades, but rallies himself and stands with Roman holding guard then Seth tries a suplex, Roman falls free and hits a Spear for a near fall.
I’m more surprised the fans are biting on these than anything, be serious people Roman has ended a major match with just one Spear in years. Roman tries to hype himself up and reminds Seth that Seth is still second place to him. Punches on the mat from Roman, he wants another Spear Seth counters with one of his own for another 2 count. More sitting and talking from both men, Seth insists he’s number one now then tries a Buckle Bomb which connects, then Roman avoids a Stomp and hits his own Buckle Bomb and Stomp but of course not a 3 count.
Both men talk from their knees because neither cares about selling head damage. They stand and start trading punches for a bit until Roman punches the ref into the ref so we’ve got a ref bump. More punches from Roman, Seth with the worlds worst pendulum lariat then Roman responds with a Paradigm Shift because we’re shouting out Mox. Roman lines up a Spear but kills the ref by accident, Seth with a follow up Stomp to kill Roman and keep everyone down. Seth looks around and mutters to himself, then goes out of the ring and walks by the title to get a blank chair. A non-branded chair? That must be the infamous Shield chair! Seth does line up that old familiar chair spot but Roman sees it coming and blasts him with a punch.
The mythical chair is down, Seth is back to Roman against the ropes, Roman looks at the chair longingly, caresses it as he picks it up, then realizes it’s not important and tosses it aside. Seth can’t believe his sexual obsession is discarded like that and looks shocked and hurt almost comically. Roman wants to just slug this out, Seth is irate over his desires not be reciprocated and we get a hockey fight. Per usual Roman is the heavier handed of the two but Seth as a jilted lover has power beyond normal people as they trade elbows. Headbutts from Roman, Seth lands a low kick then the worst Kawada kicks I’ve seen, Roman lands a right hand counter though. Superkick from Seth, Superman punch from Roman but Seth has something like fighting spirit and counters a Spear with a Pedigree, then misses a Stomp. Seth tries another Stomp, this one connects then he climbs up for a super Stomp but Roman rolls away and Spears Seth. Roman with another Spear, still no ref though. Good grief, can we end this please? Roman lines up yet another Spear, hits it, the ref finally revives and counts 3.
OFFICIAL RESULT: Roman Reigns retained the title in 33:34
Rating: 3.5 stars
Thoughts: Good Lord, someone needed to edit this badly. Shave off 8-10 minutes, tighten things up and you’ve got a genuine great match. As it stands it was too plodding early, too spotty in the middle, and way too melodramatic at the end. The general story of Roman finally moving on from the Shield was a good one but this was too long and way too self indulgent on a conceptual level.
Post match some PA tosses that Shield mask to Seth for the post match stuff, which is just silly if you think about it in universe. Seth and Roman sit at opposite corners and stare longingly at each other, Seth looking like a sad panda that his work husband broke up with him. Roman pulls himself up and offers Seth the Shield fist in the middle of the ring. Seth contemplates the mask, places it between them and gives the fist bump. That visual without Moxley still feels wrong. Commentary insists the book is finally closed on Shield lore as Seth limps up the ramp. Roman poses in a corner, then looks at the retreating Seth, picks up the mask and just kind of holds it as we go off the air.
