AEW star Buddy Matthews has been out of action for nearly a year due to an ankle injury, and a new report has an update on his status. As noted, Matthews announced in August that he had undergo surgery to fix the broken ankle that he suffered in February at AEW Grand Slam Australia where he faced Kazuchika Okada. The injury took place during his entrance. He noted in December that he was “still having nerve issues” and numbness around the ankle as he recovers.

Responding to a question during the Fightful Select Answers Q&A, Sean Ross Sapp noted that the injury was far worse than initially thought due to the fact that Matthews worked a full match on the injured ankle. Matthews is still working toward his recovery and while AEW has hoping at one point he count return by the end of 2025, obviously that didn’t happen.

AEW does not have a specific timetable for Matthews’ return at this time. Matthews’ full comment from December read:

“It’s been a long process! Still having nerve issues with a lot of numbness! But accepted that it’s gonna take time. Really thought I’d have returned to the ring by now, but can only control what I can!”

On behalf of 411, our continued best wishes to Matthews for a full recovery.
