Leighty’s WWE 205 Live Report: 08.27.21

-Sorry for the delay as last night was the start of high school football in Western PA and I went with a friend to watch his alma mater get stomped. Sadly, I have no room to talk trash as my alma mater is currently on a 34 game losing streak. So, with Peacock not having the rights to immediately have WWE 205 Live on their app, I am back to the Hulu version. Let’s get to it!

-Announcers: Vic Joseph, Nigel McGuiness, and Drake Maverick (for the first match)
-Taped: WWE Capitol Wrestling Center, Orlando, FL

Grayson Waller vs. Andre Chase

-Drake says he is out here on commentary just to see some of his friends on 205 Live. Chase controls with a wrist lock which gives Waller a chance to flip out and reverse to one of his own. Chase mows down Waller with a shoulder and then they take turns blocking hip toss attempts before Wallers gets one that sends Chase over the top to the floor. Waller stars down Maverick and then blasts Chase with a right hand. He gets caught coming back in the ring though with a double stomp on the bottom rope that trapped Waller. Nice spot. Chase gets a two count off a crossbody and then fires Waller into the corner where he takes the Bret Hart bump. Belly to back suplex gets another two count. He continues to work the ribs, but runs into a knee. Waller gets a backslide for two and then a crucifix for two. A heavy right forearm gets another two count for Waller. The jump over stomp is countered, and Waller ends up on the floor. He flips in and looks for the Stunner, but Chase catches him and looks for a German, but Waller blocks, so Chase shifts into the STF. Nice! Waller gets to the ropes to break. Tiger Driver is blocked, but Chase goes right back to the ribs. He misses a right hand and gets dropped face first into the middle turnbuckle. Baller elbow drop from Waller is blocked by knees and Chase gets the Tiger Driver for two. Good near fall! Grayson ends up back on the floor and this time he ends up being able to roll in and hit the Stunner. Baller elbow drop connects though he is damaged his ribs on the landing. He sucks it up and the leap frog curb stomp finishes at 8:45.

Winner: Grayson Waller via pin at 8:45
-Fun match as I continue to be impressed with Chase and Waller is becoming the star of this brand (along with Jiro). The crowd got into it a bit towards towards the end due to their hard work, but weren’t sure who to cheer for during the match. ***

-This is Hulu’s version of WWE 205 Live, which means we get The RK-Bro celebration from RAW and then the complete AJ Styles vs. Riddle match. Again, this has nothing to do with 205 Live, so no need to review it as it just pads the run time for Hulu.

-Next week we don’t get a match involving anyone in the division as it was be Gacy vs Briggs again and then a NXT Women’s division match: Cora Jade vs Amari Miller.

Ikemen Jiro vs. Trey Baxter

-Baxter is coming off a loss to Holland on the NXT 36 preshow and he made a run to the semis of the NXT Breakout Tournament. He at least gives us some fresh blood in this division. It goes without saying that Ikemen’s jacket is great again this week. The crowd loves Ikemen as we get a handshake to start. Ikemen controls with a armbar, but Baxter gets a standing switch. Jiro breaks the hold with his jacket and counters a hiptoss into one of his own. Jacket assisted right hand follows and Jiro gets a flashy over as he is having fun out there this week. Abdominal stretch is escaped and Baxter connects with a forearm. He gets a slam and follows with a split legged moonsault for two. He fires off some chops in the corner and looks for an arm, but then opts to roll into a pin for two. Jiro gets a slam to create space, but walks into a boot. Baxter with a roll-up but releases mid roll and delivers a splash for a one count. Baxter works a chinlock, but eats a jaw breaker. Jiro ends up on the apron and bails to the floor, but Baxter follows with a suicide dive. Nigel works in a video game reference and mentions Up Up Down Down which may have been a shout-out to Woods. Back to the chinlock as the crowd tries to rally Jiro. Baxter bounces off the ropes and turns into a Dragon Sleeper, but Jiro rolls to escape and hits a Driver. He lands some forearms and jacket assisted punches. Springboard into a head scissors sends Baxter to the floor. Jiro follows and walks into an elbow, but Jiro catches him with a superkick. Jiro heads up top and hits The Swanton for two. IKEMEN SLASH is ducked and Baxter hits a high angle suplex followed by a springboard 450, but he hesitates on the cover and Jiro turns into a small package for the win at 8:57.

Winner: Ikemen Jiro via pin at 8:57

-This edition of WWE 205 Live was kind of slow, but solid. Baxter looked ok, but didn’t show as much as Chase has in his few appearances. Jiro continues to look like a star for this brand, but that apparently doesn’t mean much. **1/2

-Thanks for reading!

The final score: review Good

A solid show this week with a strong opening match and then a decent Main Event. At this point Waller and Jiro as the clear stars of this show, but with neither getting a chance on NXT that doesn't mean much. The future of this brand is still shaky as next week not a single match involving anyone from the division. I guess we will worry about that next week.
