OVW Taping Results (SPOILERS)
Here’s the Ohio Valley Wrestling Television report for June 27th, 2012 from toasty Louisville, Kentucky. All of the titles in OVW are now vacant after this show, as Board of Directors member Ken Wayne continued to play his silly nonsensical games with Danny Davis and Josette Bynum, who are both vying for control of OVW, which will supposedly be decided at the July 7th Saturday Night Special, and also all of the titles will be decided at that show as well.
I don’t know what has happened, but the booking has totally fallen off a cliff here lately, and I don’t mean Compton. It’s suddenly become just terrible, and I’m talking WWE level terrible. Why? It sucks, I can tell ya that much. Also, it’s surprising just how bad Ken Wayne is in his on air role here. At one point during this crappy show tonight, a fan near me said “I’m so sick of hearing Ken Wayne talk”….Amen!
There were several long pauses between segments tonight, and no doubt they were backstage setting stuff up then and booking on the fly. If they weren’t booking on the fly, then I’m seriously frightened. Also no pre-taped backstage segments at all tonight, so I think this was an “arrangements while you wait” presentation.
Dean Hill, Gilbert Corsey and Kenny Bolin were the TV announcers tonight. Ron Hed and Brittany DeVore were the ring announcers. The crowd was a healthy 175ish.
OVW Homecoming 8 will be held on July 15th with Nick Dinsmore, Rob Conway, Shark Boy and more appearing. Jim Cornette and Kenny Bolin will be inducted into the OVW Hall of Honor at that show.
Here are links to two new Taeler Hendrix podcast interviews in the wake of her TNA Gut Check appearance last week. Personally, I think she has a 50-50 shot at being picked by the judges tonight. It all seems to depend on the promo cut before the judges anyhow, nothing else has mattered to them thus far, as far as I can tell. I thought Hendrix turned in a nice performance last week, and the crowd took to her right away, and she had good appeal on TV, though she does not have a classic “Diva” look circa 2012. I didn’t think her match with Tara was good though, and Hendrix’ ring work didn’t look up to par to me, but then again with the standards of the TNA womens division, her current in ring ability is acceptable, and that division needs new blood badly, so we’ll see. Again good luck to her I say.
I heard an insider rumor that Chris Bolin, Rocco Bellagio and Michael Hayes were at the Smokey Bones BBQ restaurant tonight participating in a beef eating contest.
1. Tony Gunn beat Jay Freddie in an OVW TV title tournament match
Dark match. Gunn appeared tonight without his Happy Pills, or his stuffed bear Ralphie. Jay Freddie is from New York state, and looked like a decent worker. Back and forth early, but Gunn took over, and won with his signature Bear hug turned into an Alabama Slam finisher. Chris Sharpe worked this match, and is back to wearing regulation OVW ref gear, and appears to no longer be a heel ref, though he doesn’t look happy about it.
After the match Raphael Constantine appeared with his three ladies, dressed in Betty Boopish fashion tonight, and they had Ralphie with them. Nick Dumeyer ran out to tip Gunn off about this, and the keystone cops chase scene was then on, but Constantine and the ladies got away with Ralphie yet again.
2. Shiloh Jonze & Raul Lamotta beat “The First Class”(Kevin Graham & Punisher Van Slyke)
Dark match. I think Graham and Van Slyke are from New York State as well. Van Slyke is a big dude with a bald head and an Amish like beard. Shiloh Jonze was back to wearing his old trunks here. Raul Lamotta now has a hideous “Red Rooster” style hairdo going. A typical, but decent little tag match here. Jonze and Lamotta got the win after a double team move of Lamotta holding Kevin Graham in place, while Jonze hit a spinning kick on him.
3. James “Moose” Thomas w/Mickie McMichael beat Eddie Diamond w/Jimmy Danger in an OVW TV title tournament match
Another dark match. Moose toyed with the much smaller Eddie Diamond before beating him with his “Moose kick” finisher. Mickie Michael gave manager Jimmy Danger a stunner, and threw him over the top rope, after the match. It looked like total crap, but the crowd automatically pops big for anything the autistic Mickie does.
4. Joe Coleman w/Jack Black beat Elvis Pridemore in an OVW TV title tournament match
This was the start of the TV taping. Coleman had new trunks on here, but they weren’t impressive looking. Jack Black is losing more and more weight, and is looking better, all the time. The crowd was dead here, and this match was absolutely terrible, especially when Elvis got in what was supposed to pass for offense during the comeback. Coleman won with a power slam. This was the Hershey’s squirts.
After this dog of a match, which is an insult to dogs everywhere, Ken Wayne came to ringside and announced that due to time constraints, the OVW TV title tournament needs to be expedited to get to the finals on July 7th, so he said there will be a battle royal right now, and the last two left, will be picked by Danny Davis and Josette Bynum to represent their sides in the best of seven series on July 7th. Jeez, where do I start picking apart this horseshit booking here? Why even bother? This was totally stupid, and the crowd kinda crapped on it, and with good reason. Boo on OVW. In addition to everything else wrong with this, doesn’t this make the matches we just saw for the TV title tournament tonight totally pointless and a waste of time? Wayne said it would be the winners in the tournament so far in the battle royal, but that was a steaming pile of crap too. Hell, Chris Silvio and Cliff Compton where both in this battle royal, and they went a draw on TV a few weeks ago that knocked them both out of the tournament. They were both eliminated at the same time in this battle royal. Also bugging me was several times tonight Ken Wayne said this and that was ordered by the OVW Board of Directors, Hell, Ken Wayne IS ON the OVW BOD! Shitty, shitty, shitty booking. Anyhow this led to…
5. Mohamad Ali Vaez and Raul Lamotta were the last two left in the battle royal for the OVW TV title tournament.
They gave each battle royal participant their own entrance here, no doubt to stretch the soup and fill time for this episode. James “Moose” Thomas cleaned house down the stretch in this match, but those left ganged up on him to throw him out. Jason Wayne was eliminated late a big pop. Ken Wayne’s son Eric Wayne was one of the last three left in the ring, but was eliminated, leaving Mohamad Ali Vaez and Raul Lamotta as the two survivors. Vaez skinned the cat at one point during the match to stay alive, in his quest to become the 8 time OVW TV champion, in his mind anyhow.
Ken Wayne then asked Danny Davis and Josette Bynum to come out, Bynum brought her “Family” out with her. Davis again called Bynum a b!tch, which Ken Wayne told Davis is another 100 dollar fine on him, but Wayne and Davis both then encouraged the crowd to call Bynum a b!tch. Yikes. It sort of backfired though, or maybe it was just the God awful booking causing it, but many in the crowd started chanting for the heels, Bynum and Vaez, at this point, with Bynum making note of that fact on the mic. Wayne wanted Davis and Bynum to choose between Vaez and Lamotta to represent their side on July 7th, and jeez this whole concept is so lame to me. Two guys, you each pick one, how is that compelling?? A frustrated Raul Lamotta asked Danny Davis if he’s proven himself to Davis enough yet to get picked for something. Davis said yes, but he was picking Vaez here just to mess with Bynum, since Vaez is in her “Family”. Lamotta was furious, and rightly so, and stormed off. Look like a heel turn is coming for him. Bynum refused to pick Lamotta, but Ken Wayne said she had to anyhow. Huh? Is OVW a communist country now or something? As you can tell, this was a terrible, terrible segment in my opinion. Ken Wayne said he had more surprises for Bynum later tonight. Lord help us all….
6. Ted McNaler w/Brittany DeVore vs Adam Revolver went to a DDQ in what was billed as their “Final encounter” match
This was set up last week, and “brothers” Ted McNaler and Adam Revolver have been feuding for several months here now, with McNaler’s girlfriend, Brittany DeVore, getting heavily involved. This one started as an intense brawl on the floor, with DeVore looking very concerned. This match was thrown out pretty quickly by referee Joe Wheeler. McNaler and Revolver both grabbed chairs, and were dueling with them in the ring.
All of a sudden a middle aged women came into the ring, picture Stella Mae French circa 2012. It was “Mom”. She was wearing a camouflage t shirt, jean shorts, bedroom slippers, had curlers in her hair, and was carrying a fountain drink, and an unlit cigarette. “Mom” berated both of her “boys”, McNaler & Revolver, for fighting, though she never had a mic here, and slapped them both on the ass. She finally dragged them both out of the Davis Arena by their ears. I had suspected months ago we might be meeting “Mom” at some point, since she was referenced so often on promos, and it finally happened. It was mildly amusing at least.
OVW Women’s champion Epiphany came out in flashy street clothes, and joined the announce desk on commentary, while Blair Alexis, Heidi Lovelace, and Jessie Belle, no longer using the Smothers last name and dressed like Daisy Duke, got into the ring. This was supposed to be a #1 contenders match for the women’s title. Taeler Hendrix, with her wimpy boyfriend Dylan Bostic, came to ringside to protest not being in this match, and rightly so.
Ken Wayne then came back out awkwardly and told Epiphany he hated to do this, but he was being ordered by the Board of Directors, which he is on don’t forget, to strip Epiphany of the OVW Women’s title, and the winner of this match, and Epiphany will be picked by Bynum and Davis to represent their sides for the vacant Women’s title on July 7th. Yes, this is as bad and stupid as it sounds. Anyhow, this garbage led to….
7. Taeler Hendrix w/Dylan Bostic beat Blair Alexis, Heidi Lovelace and Jessie Belle in a “scramble match”
A shell shocked, and now beltless, Epiphany stayed out on commentary during this match. Taeler Hendrix was just allowed to be in this match, with no explanation given. Dylan Bostic tried to interfere to help Hendrix, but Epiphany left the announce desk, and she, along with the rest of the girls, beat up Bostic. But this distraction allowed Taeler Hendrix to roll up Heidi Lovelace, and win a match she wasn’t even supposed to be in. Ya, this crap is “scrambled” alright. A total nothing match.
Josette Bynum ran to ringside after this mess and said she was picking Taeler Hendrix, before Danny Davis could come out and pick. Davis then came out and picked Epiphany. Who could care??
Ken Wayne then asked Bynum and Davis to get into the ring again, while Dean Hill was literally on his feet jumping up and down trying to get Ken Wayne’s attention for time cues. Heh. Wayne and Davis them reminisced about knowing each other for over 30 years both in and out of the ring, with Wayne mentioning something about a hair brush, an inside joke between them no doubt. Wayne said he had an announcement for Bynum now, but that this still wasn’t the big announcement for tonight. Wayne then announced that Trailer Park Trash was being reinstated as the OVW Director of wrestling operations, and a happy TPT came out to a moderate pop. Josette Bynum freaked out of course, and I wasn’t any too happy either knowing that a bunch of TPT’s iffy as best mic work was in the OVW future soon, and this also probably means that Danny Davis won’t be a TV character here for much longer. The thought of Ken Wayne and TPT being on the same show with open mics is grim. Wayne then berated Bynum, in a bullying fashion quite frankly, asking her how it feels to be done wrong. Hey Ken Wayne, how many times can you bury a bad dogs face in shit before you become the abuser? Wayne called Bynum “Jocephus” during this rant, which amused me because “Jocephus” is a male wrestler out of Nashville, who is the champion of Tony Falk’s USWO promotion, doing a bad Bruiser Brody impression.
8. Cliff Compton beat Jason Wayne & Chris Silvio w/Mo Green & Mary Jane in a three way dance
TV main event time, though we’d already seen all of these guys in the battle royal earlier. At least none of these guys like each other at all, so the match made sense in that way, but it still felt like this one came out of left field a bit here. But for some good news finally, this match clicked pretty well, and they did several cool three way spots here, including a triple sleeper spot, with Jason Wayne carrying both Silvio and Compton on his back while sleepers were applied. Dives out of the ring by both Compton and Silvio occurred. Compton with a double powerbomb spot on Silvio and Wayne, with Wayne taking a dangerous looking fall. Compton with a double low blow kick from behind, and then he hit Jason Wayne with a Michinoku driver to win it. Compton and Silvio argued more after the match. Fun while it lasted, but the crowd was dead for this one. I don’t think they knew what to make of it, and the horrible show before up to this point sapped them.
Ken Wayne came out yet again, following yet another long pause, as did Danny Davis, and Josette Bynum, with her “Family”. This was torture by this point. Wayne said it was time for his big announcement, which was on July 7th, the last match would be a 5 on 5 gauntlet match, in a cage, for the OVW heavyweight title. Last man standing is the champ. Wayne then totally predictably stripped Rob Terry of the OVW title, which means all titles are now vacant. Why didn’t he just do that weeks ago? Makes zero sense. Plus a 5 on 5 gauntlet match in a cage? Jeez. It’s like they’re doing stips upon stips hoping nobody notices the incredibly bad booking. Psst, tell ’em it’s a cage match, that always gets a pop….
Josette Bynum had heard enough, as had us poor fools in the stands, and she slapped Danny Davis to a pop, then tried to hit him more while Davis covered up. Members of Bolin Services 2.0 got in the ring, and BS 2.0 and Bynum’s “Family” then attacked both Danny Davis and Ken Wayne, beating on them for extended period of time. No babyfaces came out to help Davis and Wayne for a long time, until after the show was already off the air actually, which made no sense either, but they wanted to sell the beating of Davis and Wayne. Heel Jason Wayne was asking referee Chris Sharpe were he stood during the beat down, Shapre didn’t answer, just stayed on the floor. Danny Davis again proved he’s far and away the best worker here. His selling during the beat down was incredibly great, and so makes me miss workers like him. Nobody works like that anymore, and when you see it now live, it’s like damn, these guys now suck even worse than I thought. This was actually a great ending to the show, though the babyfaces not coming out to save was dumb. But this great ending was also a cruel irony for what was a horrible show to that point, an easy thumbs down. The babyfaces finally did run out, after the taping was over, and helped Davis and Ken Wayne out of the arena.
