OVW TV Taping Results (SPOILERS)

Ohio Valley Wrestling taped its television show on a frigid night in snow covered Louisville. Again, only about 60 fans showed up for the TV taping, but OVW is coming off a high.
This past Saturday, January 8th, at their Saturday Night Special show titled “Rage in the cage”, they had what is being billed as the largest crowd ever at The Davis arena. Said to be a standing room only crowd. So the crowd size is wildly unpredictable in OVW. They had some coverage last week on channel 11 news in Louisville, so that may have helped the Saturday Night Special attendance.
The “Rage in the cage” show was noteworthy content wise as well. “Mr. Media” Cliff Compton won the OVW heavyweight title in a triple threat in a cage match against “Lowrider” Matt Barela, and Mike Mondo. Barela was the champion going into the match, and had held the title since July 31st of 2010. Also new OVW Southern Tag Team champions were crowned as the makeshift on the fly team of Christopher Silvio & Ryan Nemeth beat The Elite(Ted McNaler & Adam Revolver) to win the belts. This was Nemeth’s first taste of gold in OVW. Silvio’s regular partner, Raphael Constantine, was injured going into the match, so Silvio tried to take on the Elite solo, but Nemeth joined the match in progress and helped Silvio win it.
But back to tonights taping. Dean Hill and Kenny Bolin were the TV announcers, Ron Hed and Brittany DeVore were the ring announcers. There was also a live “Bolin Alley” at “Rage in the cage” with Kenny Bolin confronting Jim Cornette about several issues. Apparently it was about to get physical between the two, when Bolin suffered a “heart attack”. Heh….But he was back tonight, walking with a cane. Somewhere Fritz Von Erich is smiling at the fake heart attack angle.
The next OVW Saturday Night Special show will be on Saturday, February 5th. The DVD of the “Rage in the cage” show is already available at www.ovwrestling.com
1. Jimbo Onoo & Raul Lamotta beat Benjamin Bray & Jason Wayne
Dark match. Wayne is a name to remember. Green as grass now, but a guy with size and a good body and potential as a worker. Match ended when Onoo pinned Bray after a double team slam.
2. Paredyse w/CJ Lane beat Mitch Johnson
Also a dark match. Johnson does a jobber Kurt Angle gimmick, if you can imagine that. Paredyse challenged Johnson to an amateur wrestling match, but didn’t fare too well. Paredyse later took the advantage after biting Johnson on the arm. Johnson fired back with some amateur take downs, but fan headfirst into the knee of Paredyse, who then won the match with a running neckbreaker. By far the best Mitch Johnson match I’ve ever seen. This little match was highly entertaining. Paredyse was really “on” with his act tonight.
3. Flash beat Mohammad Ali Vaez w/Mr. B
This was the start of the TV taping. Flash went up top, but Mr. B knocked him off. Back and forth match that went awhile. Flash scored with a Superkick, of all things, but Mr. B put Vaez’ foot on the ropes. OVW TV champion Alex Silva, who is currently feuding with Vaez, ran out and hit Mr. B. Vaez gave Flash a low blow while the ref was distracted, and rolled him up for the pin, but Silva pulled the ref out of the ring. Flash rolled up Vaez, and the ref counted the pin.
Dean Hill and Kenny Bolin did an interview in front of the desk with Christopher “The Prince” Bolin, who I guess now has his Kentucky managers license. Christopher Bolin said his dads heart attack was not fake. The younger Bolin said Jim Cornette has always rode on Kenny Bolin’s coattails. Christopher Bolin said he would announce the first person he’s going to be managing in Bolin Services 2.0 next week.
Jim Cornette got in the ring, and brought out new OVW heavyweight champion “Mr. Media” Cliff Compton w/Mo Green, Attorney Christian Mascagni and The Paparazzi guy. Compton, and his entourage, were all wearing plastic birthday style party hats. Mascagni was in a neck brace, which Cornette asked if it was a neck brace or a Flea collar. Cornette said Compton won the title in the cage match by picking the bones. Apparently Mike Mondo dropped an elbow onto Matt Barela from off the top of the cage, but it was Compton who made the cover. Compton and crew were in a celebratory mood.
Out came former champion “Lowrider” Matt Barela. Cornette announced, at the next Saturday Night Special on February 5th, that Compton will defend the title against Mike Mondo. Barela wasn’t cool with that at all, saying that as the former champion he should get the rematch, and that it took both Mondo and Compton to beat him. Out came Mike Mondo. Mondo said he should be the champion now, saying he dropped the elbow from the top of the cage, and Compton stole his victory, and said he would win the title Feb. 5th.
Cornette said that Barela had a point. Cornette said that Barela would get his rematch against Cliff Compton tonight, and the winner of that match will face Mondo on Feb 5th.
Cornette got back in the ring and brought out the new OVW Southern Tag Team champions, Christoper Silvo & Ryan Nemeth, with Silvio’s regular partner Raphael Constantine, who still has a bad ankle, and is still walking with a cane. Silvio & Constantine are known as “Fighting Spirit”. Cornette said this was a very unique situation, and that he didn’t know quite what to do yet. There was a stip attached to the Jan. 8th match where afterwards Fighting Spirit and The Elite couldn’t face each other for 90 days, but with Nemeth joining the match in progress, and winning the tag belts, it threw everything into a tizzy.
Out came The Elite(McNaler & Revolver). They were not happy at all. Duh. They asked Cornette how he can justify this when Nemeth’s name wasn’t on the contract, and they didn’t know Nemeth was going to be there, so they didn’t prepare for him. The Elite said they should get at least a rematch at Saturday Night Special, and they said really that Cornette should strip Nemeth & Silvio and give them back the belts. Nemeth cut his first promo on OVW TV. He did ok, but has a long, long ways to go. He basically said let’s have the rematch right now. Cornette liked that idea, The Elite agreed to it. Cornette said let’s scrap the next scheduled match and do it now.
4. Christopher “Dynamite” Silvio & Ryan Nemeth w/Raphael Constantine beat The Elite to retain the OVW Southern Tag Team titles
McNaler broke out a pretty Butterfly spulex early. Silvio took the heat here. McNaler came off the top rope, only to be greeted by a Silvio Superkick, but Silvio still couldn’t make the tag. Nemeth finally made it in. The timing on his dropkicks is getting better. The Elite cut him off though, and went for their double team spear finisher, but Silvio tripped McNaler coming off the ropes, and Nemeth gave Revolver an Olympic Slam, ala Kurt Angle, and won the bout. Fairly fun match.
5. “Mr. Media” Cliff Compton w/Mo Green, Christian Mascagni & The Paparazzi guy beat “Lowrider” Matt Barela to retain the OVW heavyweight title
This was the TV main event, and Compton’s first title defense. Barela didn’t waste any time, he ran out and slammed Compton off the top rope while Compton was up there in his leather jacket and blowing his whistle during his pre-match routine. Compton got his jacket off, and Barela took him to the outside and lit him up with chops. Barela also manically chased Compton’s entourage away several times. Barela smashed a bouquet of flowers over Compton’s head on the outside. Back in the ring, Compton finally took control, and ripped off Barela’s t-shirt, which also ripped off one of straps on Barela’s singlet.
Barela took back over, and took out both Green and Mascagni at ringside. Barela had Compton set up for his standing reverse neckbreaker finisher, but Mike Mondo ran into the ring and hit Barela over the head with a chair, unseen by the referee. Compton then knocked the chair into Mondo’s face, and covered Barela to get the win.
6. Randy Terrez & James “Moose” Thomas beat Rudy Switchblade & Alex Silva
Dark match. The story here was that Terrez wanted nothing to do with Switchblade, and avoided him at all costs for most of the match. Thomas wasn’t that thrilled with his makeshift partners antics at times. There was a nice sequence of moves between Thomas and Switchblade. A pretty double dropkick by Switchblade & Silva sent Thomas out of the ring, but Thomas threw Switchblade into the ring steps, and it took him awhile to get back on the apron for a tag, while Silva took the heat. Terrez made it worse for Switchblade by sneaking over and yanking him off the apron.
Terrez landed hard after missing a somersault senton from the second rope. Switchblade tagged back in, and Terrez got out of he ring immediately. Thomas and Switchblade had another entertaining exchange, with Thomas getting the better of it with a big boot to the face. Then Terrez finally came in to beat up on the fallen Switchblade. There were several double team miscues between Terrez and Thomas. After a miscue where Terrez knocked Thomas off the apron, Switchblade was standing on the second rope in the middle of the ring, and Silva dove thru Switchblade’s legs onto Thomas. The sneaky Terrez, however, rolled up Switchblade and got the win with his feet on the ropes. Entertaining match. Decent show overall tonight.
