Ric Flair appeared on the Ariel Helwani Show this week and discussed a variety of topics, including Vince McMahon trying to bring him to WWE as early as 1986. Highlights of his comments are below.
On if WWE tried to bring him in prior to 1991: “Yeah, they wanted me to come, Vince wanted me to come starting in ’86. And I was so close to the Four Horsemen, we were selling out everywhere and having a great time, very loyal to my friends, and I just, the first time he wanted me to come in to wrestle [Randy] Savage at Summerslam ’86 and I just couldn’t get myself to leave.”
On how he became miserable because of promoters: “When you live with, literally travel with, people everyday and become attached to your lifestyle and enjoyment of working, for me the only time I was ever miserable was because of promoters, not because of the guys I was wrestling, and everybody who ever said I was too old or I was getting too slow, you know the bull****, I lived it, you heard about it, from Jim Herd and Bischoff and everything, and the world was starting to kill me. We all know that. I don’t dwell on it anymore. I’m not even mad about it. It’s just what my life was. And when I got back, every time I was around Vince, and Hunter, and Shawn, and ‘Taker, and that, they just renewed and helped me realize who I was, as did Hulk.
