WWC’s 35th Anniversary Show Results 07.20.08

July 21, 2008 | Posted by Armando Rodriguez

World Wrestling Council’s 35th Anniversary Show from the Jose Miguel Agrelot Coliseum in San Juan, PR on July 20th, 2008

Attendance: Between 5,500 and 6,000. Way above expectations and the bigger than last year.

Special Challenge
Eugene Dinsmore defeats “The King of Old School” Steve Corino by pinfall after a Stunner. Eugene was way over with the fans, especially the little kids. He mimicked several famous wrestlers like Steve Austin, The Rock and even Carlos Colon.

WWC Tag Team Titles
The D’Jour Twins defeat The Texas Outlaws by pinfall to become the new WWC Tag Team Champions! Great reaction from the fans for the D’Jour’s title win.

Special Challenge
“The Wonder Boy” Eddie Colon defeats Trevor Murdoch by pinfall. Crowd was behind Eddie the whole match, very different from last year’s match with Christian Cage in which the crowd favored Cage. They showed good chemistry and worked a good match.

Special Attraction Match
Bobby Lashley defeats “The War Machine” Rhino by pinfall after a spear. WWC invested some money in Lashley’s entrance as they did their best to replicate his WWE entrance, right down to the pyro. He had a great reaction from the fans.

WWC Puerto Rican Title: Open Challenge
“The Phenomenal” BJ defeats Tommy Diablo, Crazy Rudy, Huracan Castillo, Jose Rivera Jr, “Mr. Hardcore” Rico Suave and Fidel Sierra by pinfall to win the vacant WWC Puerto Rican Title. No Chessman or Teddy Hart, but WWC had announced beforehand that they had visa issues. Good reaction to BJ’s win. He is getting very over and could be main eventing if WWC wanted him to.

Grudge Match
The Shane Twins/with Barrabas Sr defeat Thunder & Lightning by pinfall after Barrabas nails Thunder with a roll of quarters. Talk about old school! I guess that with the rumors of T & L leaving WWC after this show, WWC did not want them to go out with a win. They are just rumors, but who knows?

Carlos Colon retirement ceremony
Almost the entire roster came out for the ceremony. So did the special guests, Chicky Starr, Abdullah the Butcher, Harley Race and Jose Rivera Sr. They showed a pre-taped message from Ric Flair on the big screen. Flair praised Colon as one of his best rivals and friends and said he enjoyed working in Puerto Rico. Flair then puts his arms around a young lady and tells Carlos that “I hope you remember those times. WOOOO!”. Obviously talking about partying and stuff, Carlos chuckled at that and the fans went crazy with laughter. A chant of “Invader” started, maybe to piss off Colon, but Colon actually acknowledged the chant and said “Thanks to Invader’s #1, #2, #3 and #4 for their contributions in this 35 years”. The fans also chanted “Savio Vega”, but those chants where ignored. A representative from Governor Anibal Acevedo Vila came out and delivered a message from the Governor, but he got loudly booed. Finally, they present Carlos with a replica of the old Universal Title as tribute and he gives a final farewell to the fans.

Universal Title League Finals: WWC Universal Title
“The Rebel” Noriega defeats Orlando Colon by pinfall to become the NEW UNIVERSAL CHAMPION! Both men where busted open in a bloody match that was among the best of the night. Rey Gonzales even came out to cheer Noriega on. Crowd seemed to like the fact that Orlando did not win, but the crowd was evenly split during most of the match. The new title belt looks really good, more like the old WWE title belts.

The Rematch of the Decade
“Mr. Ratings” Rey Gonzales defeats Carlito Caribbean Cool by pinfall when he manages to reverse a sleeper hold into a pinning predicament and win. Quote me surprised! Both men where cheered wildly by the fans. After the match, Carlito extends his hand to Rey and says that Rey proved that he was the teacher and Carlito the student. Rey shakes his hand, but Carlito then gives him the Backstabber! He gets an apple and spits on Rey’s face. Carlito says that he was always a very bad student. Great reaction towards Carlito for this! Rey then slowly got up and received a standing ovation as well as the show came to a close. Rey even spent some time around the ring high fiving fans and thanking them for the support.
