The Triple Threat 7.22.07: The 55th Edition

Hello ladys and gents, welcome to this weeks Triple Threat. This week we got all the stuff we can possibly think of all in this one column. (its been a slow week we couldn’t think of much.) Read the column, tell your friends, family and pets that can read all about the wonderful things you are about to read. Enjoy!
Topic #1 The Great American Bash is this Sunday what do you think of the card?
David Martell: I’m just going to break down the card here:
Cruiserweight Open: This will be just like every other one. Its going to be a cluster fuck of little guys.
Sandman vs. Carlito: This is really a weird feud. I doubt this match will be any good but it could be fun.
United States Champion MVP vs. Matt Hardy: This could be the best match on the card. MVP has really improved over the last few months and is becoming a break out star. Matt Hardy has also had a great year and this could he could be hitting the top of the Smackdown roster really soon. I think this will be a great match but I think MVP will keep the belt.
Dusty Rhodes vs. Randy Orton (Texas bull rope match): They had a damn good storyline going on right now but let’s face it, Dusty is way out of his prime. I much rather see Orton going against Cody, hopefully this will continue into a feud with those two.
Woman’s Champion Candice Michelle vs. Melina: This is going to suck, bathroom break!
Intercontinental Champion Umaga vs. Jeff Hardy: Umaga has this won. This will probably be a glorified squash match.
ECW World Champion John Morrison vs. CM Punk: Whats up with the Morrison name anyways? This could really be a great match if given time. Both of these guys have great talent and if everything works out we might get a 4 star match out of these guys.
World Heavyweight Champion the Great Khali vs. Kane vs. Batista (Triple Threat Match): This may be the worst booked title match in wrestling history. If this is WWE’s way of continuing the shittiness of The Great American Bash, then they are doing a great job. Do not watch this match, your eyes may explode.
WWE Champion John Cena vs. Lashley: I really think this could be a good match but a lot of people doubt it. This will be WWE’s two favorite people going against each other, who will they choose? I say Cena keeps the belt but something will happen so that Lashley won’t look weak.
Alex Mattis:Will the GAB curse be broken this year? Or will this follow the trend and be one of the worst PPV’s of the year? The Cena-Lashley main event has an interesting and all around good build up, we’ll have to see how these two will do one on one. Lashley is still green and Cena is… well Cena, but I welcome a surprisingly good match. Dear lord will the Khali-Batista-Kane match be horrible. Like hard to watch horrible. I expect CM Punk and John Morrison be a show stealer with some what screwy ending so that Morrison can hold on to the title but Punk wins or at least looks strong.
Zach Brown: I’ve always thought that The Great American Bash sucks, and this year’s is no exception. Pretty much the only match that I’m interested in is the Johnny Nitro…I mean John Morrison vs. CM Punk match. Every other match on the card shouldn’t even exist. Why would you waste using Randy Orton against Dusty Rhodes? Unless Randy RKO’s that mountainous mole off of Dusty’s stomach, there is almost nothing worth watching on this PPV. Cena and Lashley might deliver, but the pairing of The Great Khali, Kane, and Batista is one of the worst ideas for a co-main event I’ve ever heard of. Pass.
Topic #2 Triple X has reformed in TNA, what are your thoughts?
David Martell: Elix Skipper sucks! I just had to get that off my chest. I really think this has potential to be a great thing but how TNA uses people these days this could just end up being nothing. I like the combination of Daniels and Shenshi. They have had a lot of good matches in the past and lets hope we can get some of that now. Triple X vs. LAX anyone?
Alex Mattis: I was very excited to see this unfold last Sunday at Victory Road. I think they should have explained it more or shown a video package of what they were before, because alot of the TNA audience today isn’t familiar with the old TNA stuff. In any event I hope this means more TV time for the Fallen Angel and Senshi, and hopefully a XXX Vs. LAX match. I really hope this starts a turn for the tag division, back to it being good.
Zach Brown:Like the old saying goes, you don’t really know what you have until it’s gone. A few months back, Alex got me watching some of Triple X’s old matches, and seeing the chemistry that Elix Skipper and Christopher Daniels had was definitely a sight to see. For some reason, I loved their feud with America’s Most Wanted. They put on great matches, no matter how stale of a tag team AMW could sometimes be. The fact is, I love Fallen Angel, Elix, and Senshi, and I couldn’t be happier about Triple X reuniting.
Topic #3 The Great Khali won the WWE World Title this past week in a twenty man battle royal. What do you think of this atrocity?
David Martell: I hate the Great Khali. I think he is a waste of roster space and I think he is one of the worst wrestlers of our time. I don’t care how big this guy is, it means nothing if you don’t have any wrestling ability. I believe that he may just be the worst World Champion of all time. Smackdown has went to shit and this just put the icing on the cake.
Alex Mattis:Good God, how can anyone in the E think this is a good move? I’d rather have Batista as champ. Even Kane. Just an all around terrible decision, when are they going to realize that this guy is nothing. He’s tall big deal, he cannot wrestle at all. He doesn’t deserve the belt and it’s people like him that make that title mean nothing.
Zach Brown: I want to throw up. Seriously. Every time I hear about this…I get nauseous. The Great Khali is terrible and has no business even being in the same room with the title. He makes Edge look like Kurt Freaking Angle. Let’s leave it at that.
Topic #4 Triple H is rumored to be returning at Summerslam. How do you feel about this?
David Martell: Unlike several people, I am a bit excited about Triple H returning. I can’t help it, I love to hate the guy. I really want to know if they are going to make him go straight for the title or just have him be on the lower end of the upper card. I really don’t want to see him with the belt but it is always fun to see a face chase a heel. Lets hope we don’t see him tear another quad.
Alex Mattis: No one can deny that with Triple H out of the picture, the E has had a stronger product this year. When he makes his way back, expect everything to be about him once again. It may help the E in the way of a ratings boost but will suffer the same way they have since ’02. Then HBK will come back and Raw will be all about DX again.
Zach Brown: Oh Triple H…how I long for you to stay injured. That may sound harsh but you have to admit, some good things can happen when Triple H gets injured. It’s almost as if younger talent gets a chance to rise…or more deserving people get to hold titles…hell, there may even be a good PPV every now and then, you never know. Ok to be honest, Triple H’s return will help the WWE. Edge just got injured, ratings are sagging, and WWE could use another main eventer on the scene right now. And yeah, the guy is talented. But for some reason, I always prefer a program without Triple H simply because I get to see some younger and often more talented wrestlers get the treatment they deserve. It’s almost like a glass ceiling is somehow…lifted. Imagine that.
Topic #5 TNA is having a Winner takes all match at Hard Justice with Joe vs. Angle. The winner gets all the titles in TNA plus the IWGP championship. Is this a good or bad idea?
David Martell: TNA has really gotten stupid. You can’t have one person be every champion in the company, its just plain stupid. On the PPV after Hard Justice the under card wont mean anything. I really can’t stress any more about how stupid this is. They seem to be basing their company after two people and forgetting everyone else, no wonder why everyone wants out of their contracts. I hope there’s a DQ so none of this shit will have to happen.
Alex Mattis: Well I’m never gonna complain when Samoa Joe Vs. Kurt Angle is on my TV, but I think the stipulation of this match is rather ridiculous. What is going to be the point of the undercard? And I guess it’s only in TNA where one man can hold a set of tag titles. I just don’t see a clean finish to this. TNA isn’t going to give Joe the belt at a Orlando show, it’s going to be a big one like “Bound For Glory.” And Joe isn’t goin down like a bitch, so Angle will most likely have to cheat to win all the gold. Setting up a rematch later on this year, with Joe FINALLY winning the belt. But why do all the belts have to be on the line. Joe just wants the World title as does Angle, why we gotta bring X-Division and Tag belts into this? Just doesn’t make sense.
Zach Brown:This is a terrible idea. You don’t put all the titles in one place like that. It just doesn’t make any sense. I mean, yeah, I want Joe to have the TNA title around his waist…but this is just stupid. Why not wrestle for Kurt’s WWE replica belts while they are at it!? It just makes me shake my head at TNA’s booking. The whole point of having different and unique titles is to make SEVERAL stars, not just TWO and especially not ONE. And by the way, if Kurt wins all those belts, we riot.
Topic #6 How do you think Edge’s injury will effect Smackdown?
David Martell: This is a really big hit for Smackdown because not only did they loose their top heel but they lost one of their one their most entertaining wrestlers. Smackdown is on its last thread and hopefully by the time Edge comes back something will be fixed. I believe this is Edge’s second time tearing his pectoral muscle so this could be bad news for the future. I wish him a speedy recovery.
Alex Mattis: Well anyone who reads this knows I do not care for Edge at all. In fact I think he is the most over ratted wrestler around, but this sucks for SmackDown because they were building the entire brand around him. It’s odd this happens around the time of the steroid debate because Edge to me is a prime example of someone who juiced and tearing muscles like that can tend to be caused by roids. Anywhoo this has already screwed up SmackDown because now the Great Khali is champ… I already miss Edge as champ. You win universe.
Zach Brown: Man this really is a heavy dose of déjà vu. The whole reason for Edge going to Smackdown was because of the already injured WWE talent. Obviously his injury has made Smackdown take an IMMEDIATE turn for the worst. I don’t know how much worse it could be with Khali being the champion. I’d honestly want anyone else on the roster with the strap. Seriously. I think I’ll honestly miss Edge for the 4 months he’s gone. He’s not exactly a master in the ring (with the least effective spear in history), but he’s a natural heel, and I’ve always liked that about him.
Feedback
This is from Tanner Pruitt: I just read the new edition of the Triple Threat. I must say, I find it quite funny that people are up in arms, saying that we need congress to regulate the WWE and wrestling as a whole to insure that wrestlers aren’t doing drugs when congress doesn’t even regulate so-called “real” sports. Asking for congress to regulate wrestling is just asking for more broken promises. If you’re a wrestler and you’re taking drugs, performance enhancing, downers, uppers, or whatever, you are making a conscious decision to use them. You are putting your fate in your own hands, just like anything else.
The WWE’s program does work as we did see The Great Khali pulled off the card a little while back due to tests from the program showing that Khali had an elevated level of enzymes in his liver.
This program does work, but because one man who’s name I will not mention, screwed up and killed his wife and his son, the media wants the WWE’s head on a plate. The man that committed such atrocities did it in a way that would be deemed “intentional” if everyone took a closer look at the reports and conditions surrounding the deaths that were filed by the police department. The Bibles next to the bodies, the amount of time between the murders, all of these things are key points in favor of these being intentional murders and not “simply acts of rage”.
So lets step back, take a deep breath and look at the whole picture before jumping to conclusions and answers.
David Martell: I agree with you to an extent. I do think that the WWE’s wellness policy does work but it only works on those who they enforce it upon. We have seen in the past 6 months people like Chris Masters, Lance Cade, and Renee Dupree looks tones of mass from the wellness policy but people like Batista, John Cena, and Lashley haven’t been affected at all. I really hope WWE does get regulated just so we can see real talent get to the top instead of the big guy. Thanks for the feedback.
Alex Mattis: Your right that congress doesn’t need to regulate wrestling and that it is the individuals decision to take these drugs. But when the E is pushing guys based on their bodies, it puts pressure on other wrestlers to take shortcuts to look that way. It’s a double edged sword. The E’s wellness program is more crooked than Lance Bass. Khali was not pulled off of a show, he had to go to the ER for the problems with his liver, similar to what happened with Bobby Lashley. Neither of these men have done a day of suspension. Look at Lashley, Batista, Cena, Edge and tell me those guys don’t juice. The E will make an example out of people like Chris Masters, Renee Dupree, and other lower-tier wrestlers but do you think if their top money makers tested positive they would expose their drug use and suspend them? No.
Zach Brown: I completely agree. I’m glad there are wrestling fans like you who are clearly informed and sensible about the recent tragedy and controversy in the wrestling community. If only the media could have the same sort of rationalization. Thanks for reading!
