Robert Whittaker Isn’t Taking Rafael Natal Lightly

March 24, 2016 | Posted by Jeremy Thomas

Robert Whittaker spoke with MMAjunkie about his fight with Rafael Natal at UFC 197. Check out the highlights below:

On fighting on the same card as Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier: “It’s a huge honor and privilege to be amongst the ranks of those super athletes. As you said, I’ve been a staple of these homebound cards and I love that. I used to look for that because it’s comfortable, I get to fight in front of my home crowd and I enjoy it. I think it’s time for me to go out there and show what Australia has to offer; what Australia is bringing out now. I’m excited.”

On Natal: “I think anybody that thinks Rafael Natal is a step down, loses. He’s a super athlete, as well. He’s in the top 20 and he’s beaten some dudes, man; he’s rugged. He’s got a reliable skillset. Yeah, he’s not a showcase or the prettiest fighter to watch but he’s a rugged, persistent, determined dude. I’m not going to underestimate him. I don’t think he’s a step down at all. I’m going to go in there and do my thing and I’m going to take it like it’s the biggest fight of my life, which it is.”

On the idea that he could do for Australian MMA what Conor McGregor has done for Ireland: “It’s a huge honor. It’s always good to be in the good graces of your boss. I’m honored that he’s got his sights on me. I like putting on exciting fights; I’m always going for the finish. I like fighting. But (the praise) doesn’t help me beat Natal, know what I mean? I just push it to the side, get back on the mats and do my work.”
