Christopher Nolan Determined to Have Tenet Release on Schedule in July
Tenet is currently set to release in July, and if Christopher Nolan has his way, those plans will hold. IMAX CEO Richard Gelfond said during a recent earnings call (per Rerelease News) that Nolan is pushing to make sure that the film opens in theaters on July 17th as planned as other studios have jettisoned release dates in the months leading up to July.
“Certain filmmakers are very anxious to have their movies released,” Gelfond said. “I don’t know anyone in America who is pushing harder than Chris Nolan to have the theaters open and to have his movie released in July when it’s scheduled for.”
Tenet is the first major release currently set for theaters amid the pandemic, with Mulan currently set to bow the week after on July 24th. There’s question whether the films will be able to bring people into theaters even with their high-profile nature and lack of competition; even assuming the first wave of COVID-19 will be under control by then, audiences may be hesitant to go to a public venue like a theater in July.
Gelfond added that IMAX is working to make sure they they can complete work on upcoming films like Tenet without compromising safety, saying, “In the near term, we have incorporated a number of remote tools into our workflows and a range for select staff to have safe access to our post-production facilities so we can continue work on forthcoming titles like Tenet.”
