Robert Rodriguez Says Animated From Dusk Till Dawn Series In the Works
The live-action From Dusk Till Dawn television series has been over for a few years, but the property is now being developed as an animated show. Robert Rodriguez spoke with GamesRadar’s SFX Magazine and discussed the live-action series, which ran for from 2014 to 2016. While doing so, he noted that an animated series is in the works.
Discussing the development of the original series, Rodriguez said, “Over here, I have my own television network [El Rey]. So I had a television network here. And I needed to create programming, so Quentin [Tarantino] and I still control the rights to it. So I went, ‘Oh, wow, I’d love to expand the story of Santánico Pandemonium, and the whole Aztec vampire lore for my network.’ And then internationally it was just put out as a Netflix original, I think is probably how you saw it. But here it was an original series for my television network, action television network called El Rey, which is, you know, the place they’re trying to get to at the end of Dusk till Dawn so it fits perfectly [laughs]. That was originally why we did it, so we did three seasons of that.”
He went on to say, “And now we’re looking towards, we’re developing an animated Dusk till Dawn. You’re the first person to hear that!”
The series was based on the 1996 movie directed by Rodriguez from a script by Quentin Tarantino. Starring George Clooney, Juliette Lewis, Salma Hayek, and Tarantino, the film centered on a two bank-robbing brothers who take a family as hostages in order to cross into Mexico, but find themselves trapped in a saloon frequented by vampires.
With Rodriguez’s El Rey network being shuttered as a traditional cable network, there’s no word on where the new From Dusk Till Dawn animated show might air or when.
