Brian Myers Recalls First Meeting Matt Cardona, Not Telling Undertaker & Others About Love of Wrestling Toys
On a recent episode of The Sessions With Renee Young, Brian Myers spoke about a variety of topics, including the first meeting between he and long-time tag partner Matt Cardona, including how their mutual love of wrestling action figures created their bond. Check out some of the highlights:
On how tag team wrestling isn’t the goal for most rookies: “I don’t think a lot of people are like, “man, I’m going to be the best tag team wrestler in the world” from day one. I think that’s something you fall in love with when you get into the business. You admire it, but I don’t think that’s your goal because you’re a person. You don’t automatically think to be a tag team champion.”
On viewing Matt Cardona as his competition: “We’re both at this wrestling school a couple months in, staring at each other like: this guy’s my competition. We’re the exact same. We both had the same mindset. People were saying, you guys look alike, you should be a team! That’s not what we wanted to do.”
On Matt’s “natural” rudeness: “We were very stand-offish with each other. You know Matt… he’s pretty rude, naturally (laughs). He’s not exactly a people person. It’s close [to resting bitch face]. He can be very firm with his responses.”
On wrestling action figures creating their friendship: “It really was wrestling figures that broke the ice between us to make us these great friends. Back then, 2003, you’re not gonna go to wrestling school and tell these guys you collect wrestling figures. It was like… beyond something you wouldn’t do.”
On not talking about their love of wrestling toys in WWE: “We eventually get signed and we’re in the WWE locker room with Undertaker and Bob Holly. You think we’re gonna tell them we collect wrestling figures? We’d be beaten to death (laughs). That really was the thing that broke the ice and cemented our friendship for years and years.”
