An electrifying quarterfinal match is set for the historic 2024 Opera Cup, as lucha libre icon Místico faces off against the emerging Atlantis Jr. in New York City. This high-stakes showdown, which could draw a crowd of 18,000 in Mexico’s Arena Mexico, will now take center stage in the heart of New York.
Both luchadores have earned their spots in the quarterfinals after thrilling victories in the opening round. Místico, who famously defeated his rival and cousin Magnus this past Saturday at MLW’s Never Say Never event (watch), continues his quest for glory. On the other side, Atlantis Jr. emerged victorious against the formidable Okumura at Blood & Thunder, setting the stage for this epic encounter.
The Opera Cup, dating back to the 1880s, stands as the longest-running tournament in professional wrestling. Originally hosted in opera houses across the United States, the tournament has a rich history of international competition, with past winners hailing from Poland, Great Britain, Germany, France, and Canada. Remarkably, no Mexican wrestler has ever won the prestigious cup.
As two of CMLL’s best step into the ring at Summer of the Beasts, the question looms: could Místico or Atlantis Jr. be the first Mexican to etch their name in the annals of the Opera Cup’s storied history?
Join Major League Wrestling on August 29 at the Melrose Ballroom for a night of unparalleled action, as New York City witnesses the clash of two major league luchadores, with the Opera Cup—and history—on the line.
