Cain Velasquez has delivered his first public statement after being released from prison last month. As noted, the UFC and WWE alumnus was released on parole in mid-February after spending nearly a year in prison for attempted murder charges. Velasquez pleaded no contest in August of 2024 on the charges in relation to a shooting that took place in February of 2022.
Velasquez posted to Instagram on Thursday to issue a quick statement. He noted that he’s been getting back “into a normal way of life” and wanted to thank everyone for their support.
His full statement is as follows:
“Hi everyone. Now that it’s been a couple weeks since my release, I’ve had some time to kind of get kinda back into things and get back into a normal way of life. And get used to doing the normal things, being at home for the family and being there with my kids. I just wanted to thank everybody for their love and support. Your words of inspiration, of encouragement constantly just lifted me up, myself and my family.
“So I just wanted to take this time to thank everybody for the constant support. You have no idea what your words, and your encouragement, and your love has meant to me and my family. So just thank you. I’ll keep doing the work to get back to everyone. And just for myself now, just slowly get back out there without — I didn’t want to overwhelm myself with the pace of life that I was getting used to, to now all of the sudden, a new way of life, a new way of living, a new rhythm. So for myself, I just had to kind of get used to it, and I’ve been doing that. So again, thank you, thank everyone and it’s good to be out.”
Velasquez was arrested in February of 2022 after he engaged in a car chase and shot at a man who was accused of molesting his son at a daycare. The high-speed chase saw him follow a car that that contained the accused sex offender, his stepfather, and mother. Velasquez rammed his own vehicle into the car and fired multiple shots, but missed the man and instead hit the stepfather. He was charged with attempted murder and the gun charges shortly after.
