Hello everyone and welcome to 411mania’s LIVE coverage of UFC on ESPN+ 104, I’m Robert Winfree and I’ll be your host for the event. As the year begins to wind down the UFC is back in Canada since January and it’s the first trip to Edmonton specifically since July of 2019. They’ve brought a decent if somewhat unremarkable card but the top two fights are solid affairs. At flyweight former champion Brandon Moreno battles Amir Albazi in a fight with title implications, and in the co-main event Rose Namajunas takes on Erin Blanchfield in a 5 round affair. We did lose Derrick Lewis vs. Jhonata Diniz late last night, but other than that things have been fairly smooth. Other fights worth watching, Victor Henry vs. Charles Jourdain is solid and Youssef Zalal vs. Jack Shore both have some potential. Mostly what stands out on the card is the lack of fights that look awful even if precious few stand out as great. Mostly let’s hope the action exceeds what it seems on paper.

UFC on ESPN+ 104 comes to the world from Rogers Place in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Brendan Fitzgerald, Daniel Cormier, and Paul Felder will be calling the action. On the regulatory front this is our first event with the new rules in place so it seems prudent to go over them. Firstly the 12-6 elbow has been legalized, you still can’t hit the back of the head with it, but that much maligned strike has finally been legalized. Secondly the definition of a downed fighter has changed, you now need something other than your hands and feet on the mat to be considered downed. Put another way hands are taken completely out of the equation for determining if you’re downed, so a lot of positions previously safe are not anymore. We’ll keep an eye out to see if any of these changes play out but personally I like both alterations.

I might be late to the fights today, I have a prior engagement that might run over the first couple of fights but it shouldn’t conflict too much with the bulk of the card. I’ll be sure to include the results in a list and the final report will have my usual format completed for them. I appreciate your patience and understanding in this matter.

Jamey-Lyn Horth defeated Ivana Petrovic via split decision.
Cody Gibson defeated Chad Anheliger via unanimous decision.

Serhiy Sidey dropped his UFC debut back in January but now looks to get that all important first UFC win under his belt. Garrett Armfield has gone 2-2 in the UFC most recently falling to Brady Hiestand but a win here would make him 2-1 on the year and would let him look towards 2025 with some positive momentum. Close fight here but Sidey is your slight -130 favorite to +110 for Armfield.

Bantamweight Bout: Garrett Armfield (10-4, 135 lbs.) vs. Serhiy Sidey (10-2, 135 lbs.)

ROUND THREE: Joined in progress with Armfield hitting a takedown and moving to side control. Armfield gets the backpack position and starts fishing for a choke. Sidey gets pulled back down to the mat but does get out of the choke and spins on top of Armfield. Armfield is able to scramble up and hits another takedown into half guard. Full mount for Armfield and he hits a 12-6 elbow, so nice to see those legal. Armfield switches to the back and gets both hooks in. Sidey is able to scramble up and they reset on the feet. Sidey pushes forward and lands a knee but then gets taken back down, he’s got a guillotine but no guard and Armfield settles into half guard. Armfield with more elbows and Sidey is bleeding from the side of the head. Side control for Armfield, Sidey half thinks about a buggy choke but can’t find it. Armfield moves to the back again and attacks one last choke as the round ends.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Armfield based on what I saw

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Serhiy Sidey via split decision (28-29, 29-28 x2)

I can’t comment on that one until I see the first couple of rounds later. Commentary seems to disagree and think Armfield won.

Alexandr Romanov has gone just 1-3 in his last four fights and was tapped out in fairly short order by Jailton Almeida back in June, now he’s trying to avoid another losing streak and prove he’s still a worthwhile heavyweight fighter. Rodrigo Nascimento had a four fight unbeaten streak broken back in May when he fell to Derrick Lewis, he’s now trying to avoid his first losing streak. There’s a slight edge for Romanov at -140 while Nascimento’s comeback sits at +120.

Heavyweight Bout: #15 Rodrigo Nascimento (11-2 1 NC, 264 lbs.) vs. #13 Alexandr Romanov (17-3, 261 lbs.)

ROUND TWO: Nascimento stalks forward and lands a couple of punches then Romanov forces a clinch on the fence. The crowd is bored and we get a “fuck Trudeau” chant. The ref warns them to do stuff, at most Romanov is engaging in busy work and when he tries to level change Nascimento shoves him off. Romanov tries a single leg, can’t find it but he slips to the back and rides Nascimento to the fence and we’re back where we spent most of round one. Nascimento is able to wall walk and Romanov gets to his back and rides him back down. Again they wind up chest to chest and stall then the ref breaks them up. Romanov looks a little fatigued now. Nascimento with a left hook then they trade power hand punches. Both men land, because defense is for lighter weight fighters I guess. Uppercut from Nascimento. Nascimento lands a left hook. Romanov avoids a high kick then lands a left hand. They keep just jousting punches, feints and defense are not much of a priority for either man. Romanov complains of a low blow and we get a time out. Replay confirms the kick to the groin. Romanov takes 1:45 and we’re back to fighting with 30 seconds left in the round. A lot of walking then throwing ugly punches as both guys are fatigued. Nascimento lands a right to the body. Jab from Nascimento. They trade power hand punches again. Both men land in close. Stiff jab from Nascimento. Romanov lands a left hand. They trade one last time as the round ends.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Nascimento but could go either way, 29-28 Romanov overall

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Alexandr Romanov via unanimous decision (30-27 x3)

No issues with that scoring. No interview for Romanov because the fight kind of sucked.

Jack Shore has been with the UFC for a little over five years, he had a good run at bantamweight and has gone 1-1 since returning to featherweight last year. Shore lost his last fight and is trying to avoid his first ever losing streak. Youssef Zalal returned to the UFC back in March, he’s got a five fight winning streak going including two wins in the UFC and if he can cap the year with another win he’ll be set up nicely for a substantial next year. The odds are solidly with Zalal at -280 to Shore’s +225.

Featherweight Bout: Jack Shore (17-2, 145.5 lbs.) vs. Youssef Zalal (15-5-1, 145 lbs.)

Eventually Shore slips to the back in the clinch and lands a knee to the head when Zalal has a hand down, ah the joys of new rules. Shore looks to hit mat returns but winds up chest to chest. SCORECARD: 10-9 Zalal

ROUND TWO: Zalal shows the jab as the round begins, he’s playing with stance switches now but seems to do his best work out of orthodox thus far. Hard stepping knee from Zalal floors Shore, he gets on top in full guard and attacks an arm triangle, he gets to the dangerous side of half guard and cranks things down forcing the tap.

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Youssef Zalal via Submission, arm triangle choke, at :59 of Round 2

Mic time for Zalal, he is very hyped up and plays with the crowd before giving glory to God and saying he wants to be a world champion. He also puts over the King of Morocco. He talks us through the finish, he’s very excited about seeing that knee he landed which was definitely highlight worthy. He brings up that he fought Ilia Topuria before and wants to get back in the cage with him.

Here’s the choke finish, this is a nice example of using your head to post and leverage instead of clearing to side control.

Charles Jourdain has gone 2-4 in his last six fights and is on a two fight losing streak, he’s now hoping a move down to bantamweight will breathe some life back into his UFC career. Victor Henry has gone 3-1 with 1 No Contest in the UFC and hasn’t lost since 2022, he’s looking to continue his winning ways here and prove he’s ready for a step up in class for his next fight. Very close fight here, -125 on Jourdain to +105 for Henry.

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Charles Jourdain via Submission, guillotine choke, at 3:43 of Round 2

Mic time for Jourdain, he plays a little with the crowd then talks us through the guillotine finish then feels bantamweight is the right fit for him. He also says if they all vote for someone he’ll bring the belt to his desk, that got a decent pop.

Lovely guillotine, and check the empty guard he grabs to block Henry getting his legs and hips around to change the angle and get out of the choke.

Aiemann Zahabi is on a four fight winning streak including an impressive upset win over Javid Basharat back in March, a fifth win here could easily signify he’s ready for a step up towards bigger names going forward. Pedro Munhoz has indicated he’s nearing the end of his career, he’s just 1-4 with 1 No Contest in his last five fights and is on a two fight losing streak. Munhoz will be looking for a win to possibly hang up the gloves on as he ends a career dating back to 2009 with a UFC run that began in February of 2014. Zahabi is the -180 favorite to +150 for Munhoz.

Not sure which round Munhoz might have won. Mic time for Zahabi and he plays with the crowd then would like to fight a ranked opponent if he isn’t ranked himself after that win.

Mike Malott had a six fight winning streak broken when he completely fell apart in the waning minute of his fight with Neil Magny, he’s trying to rebound here and get people excited about his future again. Trevin Giles has gone 2-4 in his last six fights and is on a two fight losing streak, he pretty badly needs a win just for a little bit of job security. The odds really like Malott at -325 while +260 on Giles might tempt some bettors out there.

Marc-Andre Barriault has gone 2-3 in his last five fights and is on a two fight losing streak right now, he’s trying to halt that skid while salvaging a little hope for the next year. Dustin Stoltzfus has gone just 2-5 in the UFC and most recently was knocked out by Brunno Ferreira, he’s slowly working to get his UFC record towards the .500 mark with a win here. Barriault closed at -245 to +200 for Stotlzfus.

The First Round Finish Club thanks Mr. Stoltzfus for his work. Mic time for Stoltzfus and he knows he has power and is finally able to show it off. He plays a little with the crowd despite them booing him and he gets them mostly on his side by the end of it. He talks us through the finish and puts over Barriault to close.

Commentary talk about the recent passing of Derek Thompson, a member of the UFC production crew. He was only 39 years old and you can see it makes Fitzgerald and Cormier emotional to talk about him.

Ariane da Silva just suffered her first flyweight loss in the UFC her last time out but had gone 3-0 since moving down to the weight class, she’s trying to bounce back with a win and to prove she’s still a potentially rising force for the division. Jasmine Jasudavicius is on a two fight winning streak and is hoping another win tonight could move her up in the rankings. The odds are with Jasudavicius at -230 while that +190 comeback on da Silva is a tempting little value bet.

The Final Round Finish Club thanks Ms. Jasudavicius for her work. Mic time for Jasudavicius and she loves fighting in Canada then plays with the crowd for a bit. She knew her wrestling was a pretty clear way to get to victory and apparently loves the d’arce choke. Asked about the future she wants whoever is ranked above her that will sign for the fight.

Caio Machado has gone 0-2 in the UFC and now he’s hoping a drop down to light heavyweight will revitalize his time in the promotion. 29-28 either way is fine, the fight mostly sucked so no interview.

Erin Blanchfield just had a nine fight winning streak broken when she couldn’t find much offense against Manon Fiorot, but now she has a chance to add a second former champion to her list of wins while proving she’s still a real threat to the title. Rose Namajunas is a former two time strawweight champion and has 2-1 at flyweight, she’s been struggling to really find her footing though and despite the two fight winning streak she’s on a win here would be the one that truly solidifies her as a top level player in the division. OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Erin Blanchfield via unanimous decision (48-47 x3)

I might have gotten 1 and 4 wrong personally but the ultimate score in line with the judges. Mic time for Blanchfield, she thinks she won the last three rounds but really needed the win here. She felt Namajunas slow in the third round and knew pressure could work, and then says she’d like to fight Alexa Grasso which I think is a reasonable call out.

Brandon Moreno is a former two time flyweight champion but he’s on a two fight losing streak right now, both split decisions to Alexandre Pantoja in the best fight of 2023 and then a close one to Brandon Royval back in February. Moreno is trying to halt that skid and reintroduce himself into the title picture with another win. Amir Albazi is on a six fight winning streak including five wins in the UFC, most recently he got a highly controversial split decision that I thought he lost in June of last year. Albazi is looking for his biggest win to date and to insert himself into the rapidly crowding flyweight title picture. It’s not surprising to see Moreno as the -180 favorite to Albazi’s +150.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Moreno, 50-45 Moreno overall

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Brandon Moreno via unanimous decision (49-46, 50-45 x3)

Maybe if you squint hard enough you could give the fourth to Albazi but I’m still not convinced. Mic time for Moreno after that lovely performance, he’s very happy to be back and thanks all the Mexicans who showed up in Canada for him then feels like a new man after some rest time with his family. He feels this is the kind of performance he can be proud of and then thanks Canada for being here and hopes they enjoyed the fight. He talks us through his advantages in this fight and he loves to throw punches and be a badass fighter. Asked what he wants next he just wants to eat and see the Oilers in a few days, but he also wants to get his title back and while he’s super respectful he does plan on beating anyone put in the cage with him.
