Hello everyone and welcome to 411mania’s LIVE coverage of UFC on ESPN+ 122, I’m Robert Winfree and I’ll be your host. Last week turned into a pretty poor card, and then that turned into a pretty big betting scandal for the UFC that they’re still trying to deal with. Tonight they’ll be trying to pretend that never happened and push forward. This card is slightly better on paper but honestly not much. The main event is Gabriel Bonfim taking on Randy Brown, Bonfim coming off of a split decision win he probably should have lost and Brown at this point bordering on just being furniture around the UFC. Joseph Morales takes on Matt Schnell, Schnell should probably call it a day as his chin seems shot these days. Muslim Salikhov vs. Uros Medic should be fun though, and Hyder Amil is usually good for an action fight. Far down the prelims Daniel Marcos vs. Miles Johns looks decent, and for the second week in a row the UFC is burying ranked women’s bantamweights in the middle of the prelims. That should tell you everything you need to know about how the UFC feels about that division. But there’s still the potential for the fights to deliver, so let’s hope that they do.
UFC on ESPN+ 122 comes to the world from the UFC Apex facility in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. We’ve got Brendan Fitzgerald on commentary alongside Dominick Cruz and Paul Felder with Heidi Androl as our roving reporter and Joe Martinez doing the announcing. Keep in mind the Apex has the smaller 25 foot cage set up, and apparently the NSAC has their own rules which mostly agree with the unified rules unless it’s inconvenient in which case the NSAC ones are in play. Man this “sport” is such a mess.
Jackson McVey dropped his UFC debut back in July but now he’s back and looking for his first UFC win. Zach Reese took this fight on less than 6 days notice, hence the catchweight, but he’s looking for his second win of the year here. Despite the short notice call up Reese is the -270 favorite to McVey’s +220.
Catchweight Bout: Jackson McVey (6-1, 193.5 lbs.) vs. Zach Reese (9-2 1 NC, 194 lbs.)
ROUND ONE: These two have identical heights and reaches, but Reese is 7 years older. Both men come out southpaw. Bit of a left from Reese. Calf kick from Reese then McVey gets close and lands elbows then an uppercut. Knee from McVey in close then another elbow. Reese fires punches as both men keep attacking in a double collar tie up. Body blows from Reese then they trade elbows. Knees from McVey to the body, Reese is cut around the left eyebrow but it’s not bad. McVey is keeping position and crumbles Reese with knees, Reese fights up but McVey keeps after him with knees and elbows. Those body blows are killing Reese and McVey keeps throwing knees to the ribs. A few short elbows from McVey. Reese gets free, that cut on his left eye got worse. Body blow then a left hand from Reese. McVey keeps pushing forward and punches into another clinch. Knee to the groin from McVey so we’ve got a time out. No doubt on that one, you could hear it plus the replay is unambiguous. The doctor also checks the cut, apparently it’s not a fight ender just yet. Ultimately Reese takes 2:30 then we’re back to fighting. Calf kick from Reese. McVey grabs a clinch and resumes throwing some knees. A couple body blows from Reese as McVey fires elbows then knees. Both men land elbows then McVey lands a couple of knees to the body. Clubbing right from Reese as they break. Reese with a calf kick. They tie up and Reese hits a takedown into half guard. McVey looks for full guard and mostly gets there. Reese passes to side control and looks for an armbar attack, he winds up trying a reverse triangle choke but it’s kind of backwards and McVey is safe. They trade some blows on the mat to end the round.
SCORECARD: 10-9 McVey
ROUND TWO: Quick takedown from Reese to start the round and he’s in full guard. A few body to head punches from Reese, then McVey stands but Reese hits a double leg against the fence. McVey gets full guard again but really needs to start his wall walk since they’re against the fence. Reese gets to the back as McVey goes to his knees, choke attack from Reese. McVey tries to hand fight but has to tap out.
OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Zach Reese via Submission, rear naked choke, at 1:38 of Round 2
Mic time for Reese after the win, he feels amazing and mentions getting the call for this fight on Tuesday. He felt better in the grappling but admits to getting worked over in the clinch so he had to get things to the mat to find a real edge.
Miles Johns has gone 2-2 in his last four fights but he’s on a two fight losing streak and really needs a win here to try and get things back on track. Daniel Marcos is coming off of his first professional loss and now tries to avoid his first losing streak. The odds lean towards Marcos at -185 to a +155 comeback on Johns.
Bantamweight Bout: Miles Johns (15-4 1 NC, 135.5 lbs.) vs. Daniel Marcos (17-1 1 NC, 136 lbs.)
ROUND ONE: These two are the same height while Marcos has an inch of reach advantage. Johns comes forward early and both men probe with leg kicks. Marcos avoids a few jabs. A few calf kicks go back and forth. I’m also calling some BS on the height measurements, Marcos is taller. Johns lands another calf kick. Bit of a knee from Marcos. Johns tries a calf kick but Marcos catches it and takes him down into half guard. Marcos moves to grab a cradle as Johns gets to his knees then Marcos moves to a ride. Johns stands with Marcos on a hip, Johns gets chest to chest and they’re on the fence now. Bit of a right from Johns as they break. Front kick from Marcos, Marcos is the one going forward now. Marcos looks for a level change but Johns defends so Marcos moves to the back standing. A few knees to the body and head from Marcos. A few more knees from Marcos then he lands punches as they break. They’ll stare away the final seconds.
SCORECARD: 10-9 Marcos
ROUND TWO: Marcos is back to pressure, he tries a takedown but that stalls on the fence. Johns gets Marcos on the fence then they break without incident. Marcos keeps going forward and lands a right hand. Bit of a jab from Johns but he’s not as good off the back foot. Marcos with an uppercut in close then Johns avoids a takedown. They split a few jabs. Johns with a right hand but Marcos returns it. Marcos pokes out a few more jabs, he’s much more upright this round and his jab is working. Single leg from Marcos, well timed under a jab, and he’s got Johns down into full guard. A few punches from Marcos, Johns kicks him off but Marcos moves to a ride and lands a few punches as Johns is in turtle. Johns crawls to the fence and looks to wall walk, he’s up but Marcos is on his back still and working some knees to the body. Marcos with a mat return and he gets a hook in then gets both. Choke from Marcos, that’s tight and Johns goes out rather than tap.
OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Daniel Marcos via Technical Submission, rear naked choke, at 4:23 of Round 2
Marcos gets an interview along with the translator, he says he got very depressed after his last loss and saw a lot of people turn on him but the people that love him stuck by him. He says darkness doesn’t define him or anyone and thanks God for helping him out of the darkness.

The First Round Finish Club thanks Mr. Hokit for his work. Mic time for Hokit, this is probably going to go badly, he goes for some bad rhyming pro wrestling sound bytes to start and says he’d like to beat Valter Walker next. That’s an ambitious call out all things considered.
Mayra Bueno Silva hasn’t won a fight since 2023, she’s on a three fight losing streak that includes a failed title fight in frankly one of the poorer title efforts in recent memory and most recently an anemic loss at flyweight to Jasmine Jasudavicius. Bueno Silva really needs to break this winless streak if she wants to keep a ranking, or have some kind of job security. Jacqueline Cavalcanti is on a seven fight winning streak including four UFC wins which have seen her move up the ranks of the division, now she’s trying to break into the top 10 with a fifth UFC win. Jamall Emmers has traded wins and losses while going 4-4 in the UFC, he’s coming off of a win though and now has the chance to finally have a winning UFC record. Ismael Bonfim badly missed weight for this fight, he’s also gone 2-2 in the UFC and most recently lost to Nazim Sadykhov. Now he needs a win to smooth over the weight miss, not his first time with weight issues in the UFC as well mind you, and hopefully avoid his first losing streak. Chris Padilla is on a six fight winning streak including three UFC wins, if he can extend that success here he’ll be well on his way making the move from prospect to contender. This one closed at -120 on Bonfim to -100 for Padilla so technically a pick ’em.

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Chris Padilla via TKO, punches, at 4:30 of Round 2
Mic time for Padilla, he sends love to Mexico and his family then asks for a bonus so he can help get his mom out of a trailer. He talks us through the finish and puts over his team and says he wants to be known as one of the best MMA fighters ever. Asked about the future he just needs money, relatable but also sad that anyone in the UFC is in that position.

Muslim Salikhov despite being 41 has rattled off a three fight winning streak with the last two being violent knockouts, a streak he’s hoping to continue when the dust settles after this fight. Uros Medic has gone 5-3 in the UFC and most recently knocked out Gilbert Urbina, he’s looking for another winning streak here while also keeping alive his record of having never been to a decision no matter the outcome of the fight. Close one here again, -135 on Medic while +115 for Salikhov has to be a real tempting value bet.
Welterweight Bout: Uros Medic (11-3, 171 lbs.) vs. Muslim Salikhov (22-5, 171 lbs.)
ROUND ONE: Medic is two inches taller with an inch of reach advantage, he’s also 9 years younger. Southpaw for Medic. Both men with some lead leg work to probe each other. Bit of a high kick from Medic, then he drops Salikhov with a left hand. Medic gets on top and pounds things out to get the stoppage.
OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Uros Medic via TKO, punches, at 1:03 of Round 1
The First Round Finish Club thanks Mr. Medic for his work. Mic time for Medic, he says he comes here to fight every time and win or lose he always fights. He says he’ll be coming for a top ranking next year and then says he’s been screwed over by not getting post fight bonuses thus far, which is frankly a little accurate. He talks us through the finish and promises this will keep happening. Asked specifically about the future he plans on snowboarding in Alaska to close the year and will fight everyone next year as long as he’s healthy.

Matt Schnell has gone 7-7 with 1 No Contest in the UFC, he’s coming off of a win though and is looking for his first winning streak since 2019. Joseph Morales is in his second stint with the UFC, he was cut back in 2018 but fought his way back here with some season of TUF. Now Morales is looking for his first UFC winning streak. Morales is the biggest favorite on the card at -425 to Schnell’s +330.
Flyweight Bout: Joseph Morales (13-2, 125 lbs.) vs. Matt Schnell (17-9 1 NC, 126 lbs.)
ROUND ONE: Schnell is two inches taller with an inch of reach advantage. Circling to start, Morales avoids a punch and lands a left hook. Bit of a high kick from Morales, Schnell then lands a punch. They tie up, Schnell with a takedown but Morales sweeps and gets on top in side control. A few elbows land for Morales. Kimura attack from Morales, he winds up moving to a crucifix and landing some elbows. Schnell is able to come up on top but Morales grabs a guillotine, and that gets the tap.
OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Joseph Morales via Submission, guillotine choke, at 2:54 of Round 1
The First Round Finish Club thanks Mr. Morales for his work. Morales gets an interview and gives glory to God first then thanks his family and team. He talks us through the finish then when asked about the future he wants a UFC event in Sacramento, California. Well if they’ll pony up the site fee the UFC will go anywhere.

Gabriel Bonfim is on a three fight winning streak, most recently a controversial split decision over Stephen Thompson that I thought Bonfim lost. This time Bonfim is trying to defend his ranking before setting his sights on people ranked above him. Randy Brown has been with the UFC since 2016 but he’s never quite been able to make a serious move up through the ranks. Brown is 4-1 in his last five, the lone loss being a split decision and most recently he stopped Nicolas Dalby. If Brown can get a win here he might get into the top 15 and finally begin a real push towards the top of the division. The odds favor Bonfim at -170 to +140 for Brown.
Welterweight Bout: #14 Gabriel Bonfim (18-1, 170.5 lbs.) vs. Randy Brown (20-6, 171 lbs.)
ROUND ONE: Brown is two inches taller with five and a half inches of reach advantage, he’s also 7 years older. Both men probe with some low kicks early. Inside calf kicks go back and forth. Both men are looking to get their jabs going. Bonfim lands a calf kick then Brown checks a second. Another calf kick from Bonfim. Brown jabs the body. Front kick from Brown. Bonfim lands another calf kick. Calf kick from Bonfim, Brown’s lead leg might get into trouble if he doesn’t deal with those soon. A few jabs go back and forth then Bonfim lands a calf kick. Both men with punches in close then Bonfim fires a knee. A couple more calf kicks from Bonfim land. Brown misses a right hand, those kicks are really messing with him at the moment. Bonfim avoids a one two then is able to land a jab. Brown starts playing with southpaw and blocks a high kick. Bit of a right hand from Brown. Another calf kick from Bonfim. Inside leg kick from Bonfim, aimed at the back leg actually so that’s real nasty. Double jab from Brown partially lands. Another calf kick from Bonfim. Brown tries a blitz but winds up poking Bonfim in the eye. Bonfim only takes 14 seconds then we’re back to fighting. A few jabs go back and forth. Left hook from Brown and that’ll end the round.
SCORECARD: 10-9 Bonfim
ROUND TWO: Both men with punches in close to start the round. Brown keeps his jab working as they move around. Calf kick from Bonfim. Left to the body from Brown. Bonfim lands another calf kick. Overhand right from Bonfim mostly lands then a couple of calf kicks to follow up. They get close, and Bonfim slips throwing a knee but that knee seems to knockout Brown and we’re done.
OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Gabriel Bonfim via KO, knee, at 1:40 of Round 2
Brown doesn’t like the stoppage, the way he fell I get where the ref was coming from though. Mic time for Bonfim and the translator, he thanks God first and knows God will help him become a champion. He talks us through the finish then says he wants to fight Colby Covington. Covington still being ranked is comical for the record. To close he sends love to his daughter, then grabs the mic to take up more time thanking his team and feels his brother will be a champion too. Not if he can’t make weight my man.
I’ll let you make your own determination on the finish.
